Test over. Check your anwers/count your scores and rate yourself against the barnpot counter, bein' sure to tell everyone what you got, natch'..

- Scores 1-3 = Complete barnpot. 4-6 Should be drivin' taxis. 7-8 Hey - I'm a genius. Scores 9 up - you're a twisted gifted geek that needs to get out more...

Answers: 1c, 2c, 3a, 4c, 5c, 6c, 7c, 8c, 9d, 10d

8/10 - Seemed to misread the question about the ice cube ... knew it guvner, honest! And the other one i got wrong was the speed of light...but then I think you should lose a mark for having it as a, c and d :p

Technically this is wrong (I think)

4. What is the square root of 49 multiplied by the cubed root of 27?

It'd be (root 49) * (root 27)³ surely? Which would be 982.072805 :p

Yes that "d" on "cubed" makes all the difference!

What the hell is a nautical mile?

1852 metres or 6080 feet.

The length of one minute of arc on the earths surface subtended at the earths centre.
1' = 1nm
1 degree (60') = 60nm
360 degrees = 21600nm, which is the theoretical great circle circumference of the earth.

Nautical miles are used in navigation due to their derivation from lat. and long. In aviation we use nautical miles as statute miles aren't a suitable measurement when such large distances are covered using the standard navigation practices.

Anybody else read that as nanometers the first time around? I think it's bed time. ;)

Also, I call shenanigans on number 5. The answer guide says it's C but answer B is also correct if we're talking about a single cat with more than one crooked tail. The answer is D. QED

Quick question.

I got Q. 3 right but...

...ice floats right? If some of the ice is above the water, that section would be over and above the volume displaced actually in the water. Therefore when the whole ice cube melts the water will be slightly higher because of that section that was above the water level. Why am I talking rubbish?

Because as the ice melts, it gets smaller, and displaces less water, so the water level drops. However, the melting ice is of course putting the water straight back in at the same rate, so the level stays the same. If that makes any sense, bleugh :p

Ice is less dense than water - that's why it floats. We have to use Archimedes' rules here. They are

(1) A submerged body displaces an amount of water equal to its volume.
(2) A floating body displaces an amount of water equal to its weight.

An ice cube floats. If the ice cube weighs X grams, it will push X grams worth of water out of the way. When it melts, it changes its volume, but its weight stays the same.

It now displaces an amount of water equal to its volume, but its volume is the volume that X grams of water would take up - so it displaces X grams worth of water.

Thus we can see that no matter whether the ice cube is solid or liquid, it still displaces X grams worth of water. Q. E. D.

Fraid not mate.

What you should have put was (49)^1/2 * (27)^1/3.

This indeed equals 21.

i got 1 2 4 5 7 9 and 10.

Question 3 phased me, because i worked on the argument that ice floats so there is some still out of the water when unmelted. However Ice is less dense than water, so i couldn't decide.
