I finally had enough of viruses and spyware so recently when I got Smart Antivirus 2009 and XP Antivirus flooding my main rigg I figured obviously my current AV/Spyware software wasnt doing much if anything !
This isnt exactly an accurate review but just my test with the current AV programs out there against the recent crop of rogue fake Spyware/Viruses out there.
So I decided to update/set all files to scan and delete and ran scans on several AV packages, I reinfected my pc each time per AV software. To give you an idea of how bad it was infected heres 2 screenshots:
Pop ups !
After 10hrs and we have Dualview hijacked wallpaper action !
This is with Mcafee enterprise v8.5 :
This is with Mcafee Internet Security 2008 :
This is with Norton 360 :
This is with Norton 2009 :
Theres a reason why ive included the "My next door neighbour said Norton or Mcafees good" Results 1st the ones below are where things get interesting !
Kaspersky Internet Security 2008:
Nod32 Internet Security:
Avira Internet Security:
Heres my general quick thoughts on each package:
Mcafee enterprise: Its light and good, a full scan takes about 2:30hrs, shame it wasn't able to detect all the bugs or successfully fully remove them, but it did remove 1-2 infected files. (5/10)
Mcafee Internet Security 2008: Its more heavy on usage but ok and takes a good 2-3hrs to run a complete scan, it did manage to successfully close a few pop up windows and even closed the MS Antivirus 2009 bug but it still managed too come back and flood the system after it cleaned/rebooted sadly. (6/10)
Norton 360: The New 2.0 version is not too bad, light on usage and more responsive, took a good 3hrs to complete scan, but only found 1 bug and removed it, quick reboot and there's still dozens of spyware in the tray and pop ups though! (5.5/10)
Norton 2009: I was impressed with the speed/light usage of the new norton ! they even have a ram/cpu meter within there program? are they showing off !?
It detected more bugs then Norton360, and closed a few spyware running in the system tray and it even correctly ID/named the spyware with the correct names, no other AV software I used did this !
After rebooting sadly a few bugs remained and the wallpaper didnt change (6.5/10)
Kaspersky Internet Security 08: The programs tad more heavier but not too bad. The 1st thing I noticed is this program doesn't take any rubbish nor waste time, it started to close down almost all of the spyware running within the tray but it nagged for 2-3 reboots each time, I panicked since last thing I wanted to do was loose my scan of 2hrs ! but luckily it resumed where it had left off !
I'm guessing the scan took 3-4hrs+ defiantly the longest scan ever.... but at the end of the day it found over 200 bugs and deleted everyone, I don't think Ive had such a cleaner PC system in my life. Its perhaps the most thorough and accurate AV scanner Ive seen and id say 100% clean, rebooting the PC afterwards no pop ups/Rogue system tray icons nothing. Id say the biggest issue was the Scan time 8/10
Nod32 Internet Security 08:
Defiantly the lightest AV software around, quick installation and fast scan, took just over an hour to complete the scan and it too was able to close down most of the rogue spyware in the system tray but not as good as Kaspersky or Avira sadly, it found all the bugs I purposely put on my system but it wasn't able to correctly stop/delete 2 newer threats that Kaspersky/Avira could! Pretty much all rogue spyware vanished apart from 2 and the pop ups/wallpaper went back to normal. Perhaps not quite 100% effective during its scan, its speed made up for it.
Id still use this over Kaspersky perhaps simply due to the scanning speeds ! (8/10)
Avira Internet Security 08: Speechless, this is light on the system and reminds me so much of nod32, its scan mirrored Nod32 and took just over an hour and found over 220 bugs ! It too had similar abilities it too closed down all the rogue spyware in the system tray and the popups went this things very strong like Kaspersky but with the bonus of having Nod32s Scanning speed, a quick reboot afterwards and it was cleaner then clean. (9/10)
Avira Wins hands down, while I think its scanner isn't as accurate as Kasperskys the job was done but within an hour its like its taken Kasperskys Amazing Scanner and Nod32s Killers Speed/Usage.
