Testing a HP psu with a multimeter - how?

Hey.

I have a multimeter which I confess to having no idea how to use properly...I need to test a HP printer power supply...

1) Is it possible to test and confirm that the PSU is in a working state...

2) How?...

Change the dial to amps, stick a probe inside the small plug, on on the outside. Not the mains plug... That's if it's a round adapter, no idea if it's a proprietary one
