Testing Closed Loop CPU cooler

Is there anyway to test a closed CPU cooler (h80i) to make sure it...you know, works, before installing it? can you just hook it up to a spare SATA port (to power it) and just hold it to see if it makes any bizarre noises or anything?
Don't want to try and having my computer or the cooler blow up in my face.

Well its directly from Corsair so yeh....but I want to test it anyway before I dismantle my current rig for its organs!
