Testing noisy components one at a time

Hey all, bear with me here as this may seem a bit of a simpleton question but I am looking to test components on my PC one at a time to see how noisy each one is (case fans, PSU fan, cpu fan etc). The gfx card fan is not a problem for now as I have ordered a very quiet alternative.

The method I was going to try was unplugging everything except PSU and turn the pc on for a few seconds to here how noisy that is. But to test the case fans and cpu fans on their own wont be possible as the psu fan will be whizzing around. The gfx card would be removed also from the pcie slot. No potential for causing damage running the system for a few seconds? (cpu fan will be unplugged too)

Any suggestions? Just trying to build a quiet rig and eliminate the most noisy elements first.

try using a fan control programme such as speedfan, so long as your m/b supports it you can set each fan to 0rpm monitor your temps and then turn the fans on one at a time.

i've done it on mine and the case fans are def the loudest.
your pc may not boot without gfx card unless you have on board gfx

If you can't hear things because your PSU fan is too noisy, then surely it doesnt matter how quiet you make the other components because you'll still be able to hear the PSU fan??

PK!

I said I was a simpleton! ;) Good point, that solves that little quandry. I have seen discussions on swapping out PSU fans but looks a little dodgy. And potentially fatal with clumsy fingers. If the PSU is too noisy it will probably be a new PSU time, which is a shame as it works fine (I think it may be a 120mm fan on it though so might be ok). Im going to see how quiet I can get the rig to run on a low budget. Thanks for your responses.
