Am I right in thinking that you can test your pc without all the components in the case? If so what precuations do I need to take?

Place on table with anti-static bag underneath.
Edit: use the box in which the board come in

Thanks guys that will make it much easier to work on, will try to leave the PSU in the case and connect everything to the motherboard out off the case.

Ive still got the antic-static bag so will use that, and use the motherboard box underneath.

Anti-static bags are conductive so I wouldn't recommend putting one under a board you're running, use some cardboard as mentioned. Having said that, the chances of doing it any damage are very small.

I use a rubber car mat I bought from tesco (their "value" range") for about £2, originally I was after a £1.99 rubber door mat from Wilkos but they were sold out.

It worked a treat !!

Was running a fully speced PC complete with HDD & DVD, and installed the o/s and burnt in to ensure all was OK.

Also to switch it on I just shorted the 2 pins for the power switch with a screw driver.
