Testing parts before atually building..

Well I took the plunge and decided to buy pretty much a new PC and sell on old parts etc.

I was wondering though if anyone here would suggest testing the PC build before setting it up in the case etc. Due to some issues with my 1st build (purely my fault) I was wondering what the best way to go about making sure the mobo/psu/mem/cpu etc all work OK before setting up in the case.

Does anyone else do this at all or am I just being really stupid? :p
 
Some people do it.

If you do a skeleton build outside of the case then you need to make sure that you place the components on something non-conductive, such as a wooden table or cardboard box.

Do not use an anti static bag as they're designed to conduct electricity over their outside surface.

Personally I just whack everything into the case and hope for the best.

I've had no problems so far.
 
My building routine is as follows:
1. install I/O shield in back of the case
2. install processor and heatsink on the motherboard (outside the case)
3. install memory
4. install PSU in the case
5. install the motherboard in the case
6. install graphic card
7. connect all required wires and
8.press the power button with crossed fingers...
 
I do number 8 too! :p

I don't recommend it, but i've heard people cutting the larger anti static bags in half, using the inside area for 'extra safety', but as long as its on a wood table (or similar non-conductive), you'll be fine.

I always press the power button but forget to turn the switch on the PSU on :p

I usually miss out number 1, remember at about number 6, remove all, and then start at number 1 this time.

The MB box works fine as a non conductive stand for the MB.
I always test outside first - as dismantling my water loop more than once would be annoying.
 
Personally I just fit it all in the case, luckily I have the Cosmos S so I've got PLEEEEEEEEENTY of room to fiddle :D

DON'T bend the motherboard. He went a bit overboard with that. If you have a power switch on the motherboard, it makes it easier to test outside the case.

part 3 is installing the OS and drivers.

Heres my order:

1. install I/O shield in back of the case
2. install motherboard
3. install CPU + Heatsink
3. install memory
4. install graphic card
5. install hdd's and DVD Drive/s
6. cable it all up (data cables)
7. install PSU + power cables
8. press the power button with crossed fingers
9. switch the psu switch to on
10. press the power button with crossed fingers...

EDIT: forgot to add the hdd/dvd bit :o
