How much testing is sensible and when is it excessive?

If your overclocked rig never falls over during intensive work and gaming, does it need to pass prime on all cores for x hours or x number of passes of LinX/IBT to be stable?

Nope it does not need to do prme/ linx or anything stable. It only needs to be stable for what you use it for. I have seen many rigs whic pass these synthetics and the fail on opening a game or editing a photo.

When I test stability on my own rigs I use 24/7 I do memtest, Prime for 20 mins, Aida for 20 mins and Linx for a couple of passes.I also loop unigen for four or five passes thats it. So one hour tops and I am done!!

Then use your pc!!! only using it will tell you if its stable for your needs.

Thanks for your prompt response. That looks useful. On Piledriver, I can prime all day at 4.9GHz with 4 workers, run Aida on eight cores for several hours, encode with x264 HD bench v5.0 approx 1hr 20mins.

It has not black, blue screened or frozen during use. the thing it won't do is prime on eight cores, too much heat.

You dont need it to do prime though mate!!! so dont worry.

Only worry if it falls over in general use or indeed gets too hot.

If you where folding 24/7 this may be a different story but clearly your not so all is good!!!!
