Snowboarding is a lot easier to pick up than skiing, at least to a competent level.

Yep, it's down to the individual but generally people will get to level where they can ride pretty much anywhere quicker on a board than they would on skis. Also it seems more kids these days are going for skiing rather than boards presumably due to things like shaped skis and twin tips etc letting them do the things that where previously mainly in the domain of boards (half pipes, carving etc).
