I am not sure if this is technically possible due to the hardware in the iPhone.

Does MyWi or Pdanet Hotspot allow a device to connect to an iPhone and use the wifi connection that the iPhone has made, or does the iPhone drop to a 3G connection when another device connects?

I have tested the above with the Personal Hotspot feature in iOS5 with a Blackberry and noticed that when the Blackberry connects to the iPhone, the iPhone drops to 3G.

I was just wondering if this occurs because of the hardware restrictions in the iPhone.

My iPhone is on Orange and I don't have the tethering bundle, i am looking at getting a wifi only iPad 3 and looking at options to get it connected to the Web.

I have iOS 4 on an iPhone 3GS and I can tether the wifi adapter using Personal Hotspot with a cable or Bluetooth. Maybe Apple blocked that in iOS 5. I'm curious why your iPad can't just connect to the wifi network directly.

You can tether the iPad to the iPhone using Wifi but when you do this it will have to disconnect from any wifi network it is already connected to. However as above why can't you just connect the iPad directly to the wifi.

You may also be able to tether via Bluetooth but I have never tried.

Just tried, when you tether via Bluetooth it drops off the wifi.

Hi Chaps,

the iPad (when I get it) could connect to the wifi directly (If I was at home)

I was just thinking if I am out and about and I am connected to a wifi hotspot that was supplied by Orange, I may want the iPad to take advantage of this, if I was to use the personal hotspot feature of ios5, as soon as the iPad connected I am sure the iPhone would disconnect from the wifi.

In essence I was wondering if there was an application or a way the iPad can use the wifi supplied to the iPhone :)

So you just want your iPhone to bridge your iPad to the Orange wifi? (because the iPad can't use the Orange wifi I'm guessing).

I doubt this is possible without jailbreaking the iPhone, I've done some quick searching and nothing is coming up and I can image this is quite a unique request that not many people are looking for :)

I don't know about orange hot-spots but I installed the Sky broadband hotspot app to my wifi-only ipad the other day. I haven't tried it yet, but I can't see why it wouldn't work.

yup,

I think as soon as you tether, the iphone will drop to 3G. I have pinged Orange an email to see if I can use their wifi hotspots with my iPad.

Mame: I have Sky Broadband also so I can use that when I am near one.

I'll have a quick look at the tethering apps ( iPhone is Jailbroken) and see what is around.

If you have access to them, orange will send you a login to use on the hotspots like BT Openzone etc.. as they did for me. It is a separate package though so depending on what tariff you have it may or may not work, itll say on your online account if you have it though.

**HOWEVER** one thing I have to point out as I discovered this evening. If you tether any device to your iPhone, unless you have the mobile broadband tariff you will be charged £1 for that day.

The most important thing to note here is that you will be charged AS SOON as you swipe the little switch to activate the hotspot. Doesn't matter if you actually then use it or not, you'll be charged for it.

My Orange Contract is iPhone 36 (24 Month) I do have access to the Orange / BT Openzone hotspots via my iPhone, so in theory could I take advantage of this on my iPad?

I'll send Orange an email and ask?

Regarding your comment about even if you switch on "Activate Hotspot" I will get charged.

I enabled it yesterday and tethered the connection to a Blackberry, i'll check my account to see if the I have been charged.

Do you know if they still charge you, if you use a JB app to hide the Tethering? Like Tetherme?

I haven't tested it out if I'm honest, from what they told me, as soon as you activate the sharing it charges you, so might be worthwhile checking it and see how it goes.

Sounds like you have the same contract as me so yeah, if you log in to a hotspot, you can select "Orange" when it comes to logging into them and then use your credentials that way, without needing to tether to your phone at all.

I am on a 3 iPhone contract (think its on the One Plan) with all you can eat data and they offer unlimited tethering as part of the package. Can't fault it, works a treat. Just turn the personal hot spot on in the iPhone settings and I connect my iPad to it via WiFi. All while being free of download limits :)

I have also connected my Mac Mini to it via USB, WiFi and Bluetooth and all work as expected!
