I'm quite inteterested in have a look at text adventures, and was wondering of someone could point me in the right direction. Are there any that people would recommend, and how do I go about running them?

Cheers,
gamer

I loved these games back in the 80's.

Infocom were pretty much the kings of the genre - I had a number of their games on C64 on floppy disk - Those were the days !

If you want to play the Zork series they can be downloaded from

http://www.infocom-if.org/downloads/downloads.html

You will also need a program called Winfrotz to play them - google it. Use Winfrotz to open the .dat file that is in the Data folder of the Zork downloads.

Nostalgia mode off..

Man I remember playing the original Zork at school in the mid 80s on the RM Nimbus, those were the days.

North, North, North, Open Door, Punch Old Lady, "Punch Old Lady Not Recognized".

The best text adventures were the ones doen by Magnetic Scrolls in the late eighties. Pawn, Guild of Theives, Jinxter, Corruption and Fish. I know you download theses and run them via a windows parser. GoT was probably the best. Do a search.

I think Infocom were the best - so many good games (they relesase a compilation CD around 5 years ago with all of the adventures on there). They were very inovative as well (anyone remember the hint books with 'invisible' ink so you didn't reveal the entire lot).

Games I'd recommend are:

Planetfall (Lloyd rocks!)
Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy
Zork Series
Leather Goddess Of Phobos (first riske' text adventure)
The Lurking Horror
Suspect

The above should get you started!

Used to spend hours on text adventures on my old BBC Model B, download an emulator (or, find an old Beeb on e-bay) and you won't be disappointed.

(Well, you might! most stem from the early 80's!)

These 4 alone are probably responsible for the loss of a large part of my youth! :o:D

iirc, I had about 25 different adventures back in the day, possibly more!
