on windows i have used Notepad++

on linux i use gedit

Which is the best text editor for the mac - I want one that will show HTML and CSS, PHP etc.. in nice pretty colours.

textmate is my favourite by far and is very, very good. Also text wrangler is popular and coda. Probably best to try them out for yourself. Coda and textmate are shareware.

using Text Wrangler - cheers. Makes life a little easier, can't stand editing html in dreamweaver

I use Aqumacs, emacs for Mac. It's not bad and free as in beer.

I used to use Taco HTML edit as it made a nice job of colouring tags and not changing the code. However I am not sure if it is free anymore. See if version tracker has an older version.

It may be worth checking out VoodooPad as well. It is a notepad/wiki rather than a pure text editor but it works very well for web editing. There is a free verions.

Not free but also worth checking out is CSSEdit

I love voodoopad and use it nearly every day but never considered it for developing. Pretty much textmate is the best out there, if you ask me.
