hey there :)

just about to pay the £16 for TextPad as I need a simple text editor with syntax highlighting and was wondering if there was any free alternatives?

Crimson looks ok but have used it before and wasen't to keen.

any suggestions?

thanks :)

edit: oops, meant to put this in the Windows forum, but i guess here will have to do!

thanks for that, just spent the money of TextPad though.

i used it throughout uni so may aswell stick to it.

For most syntax highlighty stuff I just use C# express (well I use VS.NET 2k5 overkill edition because I got it free from my uni, but same thing really) for the languages that it supports.

Notepads with text highlighting are alright if its just for html, php, perl or what not but if you are coding something like java for uni then you really want to move to a decent IDE such as eclipse. Not only does it have syntax highlighting but theres also a lot of other useful stuff in there such as the debugging tools, code completion, task lists, interpretation as you type, package management, cvs if you ever need to do a group project etc etc etc.
