Textures shimmering in FS9

I've just built myself a new system out of a pre-overclocked i7 bundle from Overclockers.co.uk and running Windows 7.

I used my ATI HD4870 that I bought last April again in this build. I'm a big user of FS9 (Flight Sim 2004), but now I have a very annoying problem of shimmering graphics in the game. All buildings, fences and other objects have a permanent shimmering problem.

I never had this problem before with this graphics card. I've tried loads of combinations of AA, AF and loads of other settings in the CCC to no avail. In flightsim itself I've disabled AA, and turned mipmaps down to 4 (which helped slightly, but previously I was able to run at mipmaps set to 8).

Has anyone here got any suggestions as to how I can fix this?

One question I have is that if I disable filtering in FS9 (set it to 'none'), should the AF settings in CCC take over? I ask because when I disabled filtering in FS9 the graphics were truly shocking. I'm wondering if the CCC is working at all when I see this happening.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with 4850 maybe its something with those cards i tried for hours to sort it but gave up in the end

Hi,

I'm using 9-10, but also tried 9-7 with same results.

This card was working fine for me three weeks ago in my old computer (Vista X64, E6700).

Earlier today I swapped out the 4870 for a 3850X2 I have in another build project. Guess what? The same thing was happening!

This is really perplexing me. I don't know whether it's the screen, the GFX card, some other component or ATI in general. I read on another forum that shimmering can be caused by a clash of frequencies - between the screen's and gfx card's refresh rates or something...

Whether I set it to high quality or 4/5 it's still shimmering away all the time. I used to be able to have mipmaps up at full on the same graphics card.

Would it have anything to do with DX11 in Windows7, DX10 in my gfx card and a DX9 game?

Nah sometimes drivers cause corruption in certain games.

Since you moved to Win 7, I would suspect its the drivers that are playing up. You could try the 9.11 betas and see if that helps.

Downloaded those. When I extracted the file it created 3 folders. I just ran "setup" in the bin64 folder. Is that all I needed to do?
If so - then no change :(

Sorry, you goto the Setup.exe above that directory. And then the ATI install starts.

I'm not sure what the structure names are in that install but you just pick the setup from the top dir ie C:\ATI\Vista_Win7\setup.exe

The setup should automatically detect your system x86/x64.

Edit: had a look, its just the first Setup.exe from where you extract to, the install manager should pop up.

Would be best to goto AMD's forums and post the issue with as much info as you can, letting them know that you've tried both the latest official and beta drivers. Maybe even post screenshots so they know what your referring to.

I'm afraid the problem persists...

This probably won't offer you any solution, but I too have just upgraded to Win 7 x64 and I get exactly the same thing, but I'm using an Nvidia GTX285. I never had bad shimmering before I moved over to Win 7. Now it is really bad. FSX is not great and FS9 similar. Crysis is aweful. Tried loads of different drivers, but they are all bad. 182.50 seems to be about the best. 195.xx is the latest version!

I think you are on the right track with the driver though. It may just be a case of waiting for them to sort it.

Ya, it appears to be purely down to drivers. I know other people on Win 7 x64 yet they have no problems. Hopefully it will get sorted by both ATI and nVidia soon. I asked on the ATI forums and got no response. Also asked the question to Sapphire via a support ticket. No response.
