I quite fancy giving TF2 ago, but am unsure whether it's too late to get into it or not?

I've never used steam and wondered whether I can download and install steam and purchase TF2 through steam which appears to be cheaper ($'s) than purchasing TF2 from a retailer.

Is this possible and is it worth giving a go?
Are there any region restrictions if I download and install Steam and TF2 such as being restricted to US based servers?

Thanks.

Played tonight, really good fun. Reminds me of my old Savage Q2 league days with mad action going on. Only thing was, some of the maps that it downloads are a bit crap. Are these Valve maps or add-ons? Anyway to specify a game using just the inbuilt maps? I did connect to the OcUK server, but it was empty :(

I like custom maps, sometimes Id even rather play crap custom maps instead of dustbowl or goldrush or something :/ those maps are so overplayed that I cant stand the sight of them half the time.

I too may feel like that with time, but it's my first time playing the game

Is my Steam folder portable?

Can I copy it to my laptop?

I've got 5hrs at work tomorrow doing a maintenance shutdown, no servers and no network, but a broadband connection and a laptop battery and possibly a TF2 install :D
