Started happening a couple of weeks back, now its total pot luck if i can get to play TF2 - most of the time it happens, sometimes it doesnt

It hangs at the first screen you get when you join a server, says CONTINUE at the bottom right - audio is stuck in a loop.

Once in a game it never crashes, but i have noticed recently that if i Alt-Tab out of a game, i can no longer Alt-Tab back into it - or get back into it any other way - that never used to happen :(

I have tried it on the 64bit versions of both Vista and Win7

Ive tried deleting the registry.blob file - that just reinstalled steam, tried changing fx settings but that doesnt help, nothing is overclocked.

Anyone else having similar problems or is it just me :/

yup my TF2 does this, it probably takes me about 5+ mins to get it up and running. Its annoying but as long as i dont really try to do anything else it works ok

Thought id try deleting TF2 and start over, see if that helps..

What ISP & Router are you using?
O2 8mb with the newer O2 modem (white)

Do you have mat_queue_mode set to anything other than -1?
Ill have a look, first time ive heard of this command, will have a look once its installed.

Same here, except it stalls in CSS as well.
Try lowering your connection speed setting in steam settings.
Yeah i had a look at that just after i deleted TF2, it was set to > 2mb - Could've been the reason, may never know now :/

Had a go last night and was able to join 4 different servers with no problem at all and was able to Alt-Tab to and fro, but I no longer have character animations, for taunts and stuff, characters just talk :(
I thought that by 'Deleting Local Content' i would've lost all my settings, but i didn't ... strange :/

Just done the Telnet thing, as i have been getting the 'WARNING: Connection Problem' all the time and im always getting disconnected, so thanks for that ;)
I have Steam Games assigned to this computer in the Game & Application Sharing page in the router settings, i take it thats not enough?

Basically all of the Thomson/SpeedTouch based routers (there is a lot out there such as the BTHomeHub, BeBox and O2Wireless Box to name a few) are trying to be clever by intercepting traffic on certain predefined ports and re-writing the packet return address. No idea why it does that, some people found this out after probing the network with wireshark and other TCP analysis tools.

This means that you can connect to a server fine but the router will start telling the server to send packets back on a different port, meaning they don't get sent back to the game on your computer. This problem does seem to resolve itself after you have been disconnected about 3-4 times but the cause is the router settings.

It's a bug caused by the recent patch, many servers have taunts disabled for now so as to stop server issues caused by the bug.

I think TF2 now uses Steam Cloud, like L4D. This saves your settings server side.

Yup.

I have been moving from Win 7 to XP trying the game on both. I also get stuttering. BT and homehub here.

Prob a bug but I haven't played the game long enough to really comment.

Its been getting so frustrating trying to get a game of TF2 that i bought the Unreal and Quake packs .....

Finally got Unreal 3 and it hangs at the splash screen
Installed Quake 3 last night and at the start the fx are buggered until u can figure out how to change the resolution ..... then when I get the game running, after about 2 minutes the graphics go mental.

Woohoo, fun with Steam :(
