Coming Tuesday, August 19. :D

http://steamgames.com/tf2/heavy/

Updates all week on the above link.

The update will include new game modes and maps, in addition to new unlockable weapons and achievements for the Heavy class. Valve plans to reveal each element of the patch--as well as a "special installment" to the "Meet the Team" video series--in a series of daily updates to its website.

As expected really, Heavy updates and more maps. Nice to see some good comunity maps goign official too.

The new game mode has thrown me a bit. Have we heard anything about this before now? With the Payload game type there was lots of hype and testing and all sorts, yet this seems to have come out of the blue...? Suggests it may be a tweak to an existing game type instead of a completely new one.

Yeah this is the first mention of a new gameplay mode that I know of. I do hope its something new though and not just a revision of an existing gameplay mode.

Do you thinkTF2 is worth me buying from steam (£10ish)? I wasn't massively keen on TFC but then I came to it little too late. I've already got HL2 and Portal so I can't justify buying the orange box for it.

Definitely. The best MP game I've ever played, maybe one of the best games period. I never played TFC but from what people have said this is very different.

They might do a free weekend when the update launches, so hold off a week and you might get to try it out first.

They've changed the wording to arenas now. People on the steam forum are speculating they might be DM arenas and that the new gamemode is DM. I hope not :(

:( That would be so boring. I can't see Steam letting their standards drop like that either. Really hope its not true.

Steam letting their standards down? Steam is just the name of the application you use to manage your games and browse servers :P

:( :p

I think making the Heavy independent is a bad idea, takes away the "team" element of the medic/heavy relationship. Still good news about the update, means I can play Pyro again as everyone will be heavy!

TF2 = best FPS out there

I don't think they'll make the heavy independent, and if they do, he'll be weaker in other areas. These are the things Valve are thinking about...

Goal: Make the Heavy more viable when he has no Medic to pair with.

Constraints:

It shouldn't have a cumulative effect when being healed by a Medic as well. Heavy/Medic pairs do pretty well as it is.

It shouldn't significantly change the Heavy's role, relative to other classes. In particular, it shouldn't significantly encroach on another class's role.

It should be understandable for both the user and the player it's being used on.

Get TF2 and jump straight in. It runs off the source engine which should run at nearly max on your pc spec flawlessly. You can pick up and play with TF2, pick the pyro/soldier/heavy for easy kills, then move to medic/spy/sniper once you are happy with the speed of the game.

What he said!

Plus, give each class a chance but there's subtle depth to each of them.

I've been playing heavy a fair bit recently.. I've ~twice as many hours with heavy than soldier!

tbh, I'll probably keep sasha.. It's rare as a heavy that you'll spin up in an area that requires people to be slower, so I'll keep the improved damage :)

Might be useful to slow people down, then you can run in with a medic+pyro and take down a room of people without them being able to run away. But we'll have to see how much they're slowed down.

Oh yeah, the 5 or 6 news maps too, forgot about them. but thats still the gameplay and maps, vid, and weapon, which is still 3?

Good point. I'd say the vid and weapon will be released together. But they said its going to be a "special installement" so I don't think they'd just tag it on to another update.
