TF2 in Vista 64

Hey,

I've recently made the switch to Vista 64, and I'm suffering from a big FPS hit in TF2, which is quite frustrating. In XP, my FPS rarely dips below 60, however I've seen it hit around 30 in Vista. I was under the impression there may be perhaps a small performance hit, but not this.

I've tried all the hotfixes I can find but to no avail. My system (specs in sig) should be capable (plenty of RAM). I ran a 3DMark and in the score was just slightly less than XP, so I'm thinking it's a TF2 issue.

Anyone else experience anything similar and/or have any suggestions?

Odd, was getting 100+ fps on v64 with only a bit better setup although with a lot of stuff going on it could dip to 40 or so i guess but nothing noticable enough to impact on how i played. Have you played on the same servers you played on pre-vista as the server can have an impact for some reason.

Yeah I got latest drivers installed but not SP1, will that make much of a difference? And yeah, I still have XP on my other drive so booted into that then booted back into Vista and checked on the same server/map in similar conditions, it's a very noticable drop.

Do you have an AntiVirus scanner installed in the Vista install?

I'm on a similar system to you: Q6600, 8800GTX, 4GB RAM, Vista 64. I average about 70-110fps with full settings and 16xAA and AF. Maybe you need to update your drivers? I'm currently on an beta driver - 171.20 - you may want to try that.

I wouldn't install SP1 though as it's quite new and not even officially released yet. Let the pawns get it first and bug test

I'm on 174.51 Vista x64, FPS is constant 100+.

Its official (mine went through windows update a while back) and its made everything feel better for me.

I suggest drivers, make sure everything is up to date

i had exactly this

i never did get to the bottom of why, but the problem disappeared when i reformatted and installed on a new HD. But it started after i changed from ATI to nvidia. have you done similar on your vista install ?

There's a big thread on frame drops in tf2 over in the steam forums. The last update fixed it for me however there are users still having issues.

Rest assured it's an issue with the game rather than your system specs.

Cheers for the suggestions guys, I've found I'm getting an inexplicable performance hit in XP as well, I guess you're right z0mbi3, I hope its fixed soon.
