Howdy,

I recently got the game so sorry for the noobishness. I just wanted to know if there is a good way to layout the kayboard. I'm having a hard time switching between weapons with the number keys while running about.

Also with with the scout I would like a button which switches between Gun and bat. At the moment I have the back button on my MX1000 mouse set to "last weapon used". So when I spawn I press 3 for my bat, then I can switch between the 2 nice and quickly on my mouse. It works fine, it's just annoying changing every time I start a match.

Also is there any maps/downloads that are a must have?

Again sorry for the basic questions.

you've enabled fastswitch now yes mate? :)

i just use the number keys..

ie, when spy, tapping 4,1 disguises you as scout in a heartbeat

Yeah bledd. I suppose I just need to get used to what numbers are what. I just find it hard to move about and select a weapon at the same time. Where as on console I can just tap a shoulder button to change weapon.

I use the following

Mousewheel up = slot2 (scouts pistol)
Mousewheel down = slot1 (Shotgun)
Mouse4 = Melee

They are likely to be your most frequently used slots. For spy disguising and building, I use the number keys.

This makes it great for a quick fast switch to shotgun after firing all your rockets as soldier without having to take your hands off WASD :)

If you have any kind of admin tool, binding mouse buttons to slot's can cause havok. I have personally created a config for each class with its class specific weapon to avoid accidently kicking/banning teleporting someone!

here is my pyro config as an example.

echo **Execing Pyro Config**
bind "KP_END" "developer 1; equip 7 0 0; echo Flame Thrower; developer 0; use tf_weapon_flamethrower" //Equip Flame Thrower
bind "KP_LEFTARROW" "developer 1; equip 7 0 5; echo BackBurner; developer 0; use tf_weapon_flamethrower" //Equip BackBurner
bind "KP_DOWNARROW" "developer 1; equip 7 1 0; echo Shotgun; developer 0; use tf_weapon_shotgun_pyro" //Equip Shotgun
bind "KP_5" "developer 1; equip 7 1 4; echo Flare Gun; developer 0; use tf_weapon_flaregun" //Equip Flare Gun
bind "KP_PGDN" "developer 1; equip 7 2 0; echo Fire Axe; developer 0; use tf_weapon_fireaxe" //Equip Fire Axe
bind "KP_RIGHTARROW" "developer 1; equip 7 2 6; echo Axtinguisher; developer 0; use tf_weapon_fireaxe" //Equip Axtinguisher
bind "MOUSE3" "use tf_weapon_flamethrower"

bind "MOUSE4"
bind "MOUSE5"

bind "MWHEELUP" "use tf_weapon_shotgun_pyro; use tf_weapon_flaregun"
bind "MWHEELDOWN" "use tf_weapon_fireaxe"

Here's some of mine:

Q - Primary weapon
Mouse 4 - Secondary weapon
Mouse 5 - Melee weapon

This is
bind "q" "slot1"
bind "mouse4" "slot2"
bind "mouse5" "slot3"

In your autoexec:
\Steam\steamapps\<accountname>\team fortress 2\tf\cfg
create a notepad file and name it 'autoexec' if there isn't one already there.

I've also got

Bind "t" "voicemenu 1 6"

Which makes my character say 'Activate Charge!' when I press T :p

Might be worth having a look at changing Shift to crouch and Ctrl to last disguise. Makes it a little easier - last disguise is also more important after the last update with the spy choosing what weapon to show... I've also got Caps Lock as change which team I'm disguised as (friendly/enemy disguises)

F - in game talk

EDIT: You should be able to put that weapon setup into your autoexec so you don't have to set it every time you load up I think.

The shift key isn't bound to anything in TF2 (move it private twinkletoes!), so that's a handy one to bind ;)

Lyon and Cowell were just on my team. I assume they are from here as they had [OcUK] in front of their name. Didn't say Hi to me though :(

Why would it matter what weapon the spy shows when in disguise? I'm not quick enough to notice it myself. How do you change what weapon the spy is "using"?

Good idea on the last disguise button though. Hitting 4, .. is annoying. I see no point in disguising as as scout when you run at average speed :p

Ctrl as crouch is annoying me so will switch to shift. Will have to look into what Well Splattered said as I don't want to vote for a map when switching weapons via a mouse button. I only want them to switch to specific weapons.

Q for previous weapon, then select the 2 you want most at round start.

Mouse wheel to change weapon normally.

A side mouse button to call Medic.

And I still havent found a good replacement for B (last disguse) for the spy... might try shift.

I think I will try this

All classes except Scout and Engie, Mouse4 switches between Primary and Secondary
Scout and Engie, Mouse4 switches between Primary and Melee.

I have no idea how I would script this though. Have googled with no luck so will ask in steam forums tomorrow.

Oh searching I found a useful command to stop server music
"Play common/null"

Just bind it to a key :)

....so the same as quickly changing between 2 weapons at the start and then using Q to switch between them?

Is it just me that doesn't see any point in this? Unless you don't like using the keyboard and/or prefer using the mouse for as much as possible?

The same goes for assigning the call for a Medic to a mousebutton - Why? 'E' isn't exactly the opposite end of the keyboard to the ASDW buttons used to move around!?!

(note: unless you are using the arrow keys to move, in which case my argument fails ;))

I want to be able to move at all times. Using Q as quick switch means that my finger will move from the A button. Having a switch button on my mouse means I can switch quickly and never move a finger from a button. I wouldn't change the medic button because it's not something I use often. I will back off and then call for medic, theres no point a scout calling for a medic while in battle, you are just going to put a medic in danger.

I only need to quickly switch with the scout, engie and spy.

Remember I am coming from a console here, my left thumb never leaves the stick, I am always moving.

Edit: OK so apparantly I'm fussy, but I hope you get the idea where I am coming from. I'm not the best gamers but it just feels strange moving my fingers from WASD.

Ahh I get you, I don't play scout that much but I can see where you're coming from re: not taking your finger off A to hit Q as you'll more than likely be in the thick of it when you need to switch weapons!

Personally I'm happy enough using Q as an Engie but as you feel strange moving from ASDW then I shall let you off ;) personal preference and all that lol
