Every server I play on has team killing either turned off or its a feature of TF2?

Makes being a spy hard as everyone just shoots fellow team mates without thinking about it to see if they're a spy!

I cant decide if this is a good or a bad thing. I usually hate the fact team killing is turned off but still love this game!

If team killing was turned on I reckon it would make a spy too powerful and you'd always end up with people arguing, getting kicked for accidental kills and some kiddie deciding to teamkill everyone on the team for jollies.

So what do you reckon? And is teamkilling a permanent OFF feature in TF2?

I think it's right that it's turned off by default, especially for publics, but I think they should have left the option in to turn it on. In clan games, for example, it would definitely add another element of skill. On publics though it would be far too annoying.
Edit - and yes, to answer your question, Valve have said FF will be always be off for TF2.

The Spy is always a bit of an odd class anyway. In a decent clan game, you'd never get anywhere with him, because the opposite team should be good enough to know where all their players are at any one point.

With ff the spy class is stupidly overpowered. Plus the game turns into nothing but a team killing marathon as theres no real way to tell who a spy is unless he's new to the game and totally clueless.

As above. Can't really use FF in public games. Even if Spies didnt exist, Heavies and Pyro's would decimate everything in sight.

But yes, should be an option for clan games.

Just thought of something. When you are a spy and disguised as an enemy - what name does it show if someone moves their cursor over you? Do you adopt another players name to cover your identity? Haven't noticed!

Spy's never have full health to you, if they are the enemy.
Sure, takes longer to figure out but that is one way.

And walking around without primary weapons is another way to show you're not one.
But too many people can't think outside of the box/don't know how it works.
It's simple really.

But yeah, i'm okay with the FF being off, there are good Spy players out there!

Yup. Couple of times I've unmasked a spy because he had my name. Also if they call for a medic whilst disguised, it gives the name of the person they're disguised as - an opportunity for the actual player with that name to shout 'He's a spy!'

Hehe I love being a spy, letting an enemy medic heal me then knife them when they go to heal someone else. So satisfying!!

Back in TFC days we had 'spy checking'

An example of this would be if a defending engy died and needed to make his way back to the flag room. As he passes other defenders he simply shoots the ground to show he's not a spy.

Worked very well, but you needed a team with 1/4 of a brain for it to work.

I have a question: if you're a spy in camouflage with your knife out, does it look to the enemy like you have the melee weapon for that class?

eg. blue spy in disguise as red pyro with knife out - do the enemy see you with the flamethrower or axe out?

I assumed the costume had the primary weapon out at all times no matter what weapon you were holding at the time

You assumed correctly. For example, running around as a soldier wielding your spade shows your allies there is no way you are a spy.

Seems a bit pointless though as TK is turned off if they shoot you it doesnt hut you anyway so no need to prove anything as there's not really any tactics behind it.

If TK was enabled then I could see a reason for running round with a spade. In some ways it would be funny to see people paranoid about a spy and not being able to shoot everyone at random!

EDIT: But then again I could see just how annoying all the TK would be when people think you are a spy on a public server and all the arguments it would cause with revenge attacks, etc, etc

I believe the main reason why FF is disabled when it was enabled by default in TFC is the 20 second respawn timer. In TFC if you died it was instant respawn, no harm done, if people had to wait 20 seconds to respawn as someone new to the game was confused i doubt they would be very forgiving.

Yes it made the spy a little more difficult to play but its still easy enough to get top of a server on a decent map (not hydro).

The REAL issue with FF off is regarding capture points, an attacking team can get 1-2 people on a point and spam the crap out of the entire area without worry of nuking their own guys.
