TF2 performance issues

Hi guys hope someone can shine some light on a problem my friend is having with Team fortress 2.

His system is as follows:
P4 2.4ghz
Gainward bliss 6800
1 gig ram

when he plays TF2 in sections of any map with no other players his rig runs the game fine. As soon as other players come into play and the action kicks off his rig start to lag real bad, to the point it becomes un-playable.

Does anyone know why this is, and can you offer advise on what he can do to solve the problem.

What resolution and detail level is he playing with?

TF2 does require a reasonable spec (even though it looks simple). The P4 2.4 and 6800 are getting a bit long in the tooth now unfortunately.

the reason it happens when there are more players on screen is because there is a lot more for the pc to render, just displaying a map is easy but once you get rockets flying everywhere and people running all over the place it puts a lot more strain on the pc, turn the settings down and it will be fine

Low setting

He has everything on low already. I have an old spare x800 XT PE and my guess was this card compares well to the 6800 he has, so I was thinking of swapping it with his to test if its the card or something else. I know the x800 card runs it ok on medium coz Ive tested it.

Thing is if he knows whats causing the problem he can replace or upgrade the necessary parts.

I think its more to do with the p4 2.4ghz and only 1gb of RAM thats killing performance. My friend plays TF2 with an A64 3700+, 2GB RAM and a 6800 on medium settings without much stutter.

Yeah if I had to speculate I'd say it would be down to the CPU, especially if it is a A/B rather than C model (i.e. 400/533fsb with no HT). The fact it can render the map fine but lags when there is a lot of action definitely points towards this.

My recommendation would be to overclock the CPU and memory if possible.

It would be due to your P4 2.4 as with all source games they are cpu limited. If possible clock the cpu abit and add an extra Gigabyte of ram you should see some performance increase.
