TF2 problem - maybe steam problem?

Just started playing TF2 again on new build PC and its fine for a while then freezes with the sound looping for about 5 seconds then its OK again. Does it randomly and is very annoying.

I wonder if its Steam related because I recently bought Dawn of War 2 and that also freezes but far more in-frequently - have only ever played SP so not MP related.

STALKER is fine so not sure if its the PC. It's not like lag where you stutter but never really had a lag problem.

Any ideas? Loving TF2 again though :)

Very common problem this. Try disabling multi-core rendering in the video options. I had this problem but obviously just purchasing a quad core I wanted the multi core feature to work. I ended up having to re-download tf2 completely to get it to work.

I've not had that problem myself. But I've been having a rather disturbing issue of my own lately.

Seemingly at random TF2 will hang and the sound will loop, then I get a bubble from windows saying "nvidia display driver has stopped working but has recovered" or something very close to it and it the game picks up again
I used driver cleaner and got the latest drivers and it still happens. I've got an 8800 gt.

I used to have the sound loop problem too but i found using a program called GCFScape to defragment the games GCF files in the steamapps folder has now virtually eliminated it for me. Defragment and then defragment after every update and you should find it will help.

Not got a link off the top of my head but Google is your friend.

I tried to use that prog b ut it kept saying "this file needs write permisssion" and I don't know how to solve it.

I defrag'd the HD my Steam account is on but hasn't made any difference. Turned off multi-core with no effect and have turned as much background stuff off as possible and its still doing it.

So annoying because by the time it rights itself I'm dead :(

Have you gone into the game properties in Steam and run the verify game files check and the defragment game cache?

I've read on the net that this seems to be a common issue - has anyone on here suffered with this?

Game defraged, multi-core is off and still it persists.

Out of curiosity what motherboard are you using?

Do you play any other online games and does the system freeze up when playing them?

How are you connecting to the Internet, wired or wirelessly?

Further update - all games have problems.

All games have random sound loops - Bioshock 2 and Dawn of War 2. However these 2 games don't freeze.

Pretty sure its a problem with the sound drivers for the ATI graphics card and the mobo onboard sound.

If you think the ATI sound device may be causing a problem then simply disable it in the device manager. At least it'll be one more thing you can eliminate from your investigation.
