Well I'm still getting my choke issue. I've tried different rates, turning my AV off and different game settings. Oh and I've even reinstalled TF2.

Now I can load CS: S up and I'll get no choke at all. I can also load TF2 in XP and it's fine.

Now I'm playing on good servers (MPUK/Jolt/Wireplay) and I get low pings.

Just tried in XP again and the issue is there.

Not sure on the port - but isn't that just a case of being open or closed?

Some weird goings on with the graph :/ choke is getting up to 80 (although not in the graph) and loss is getting quite high :(

Yet when I ping the server I get no loss.

Also my ping is shown as 33 on the scoreboard yet in the net_graph 3 area it's 140-300ms

Looks like you're playing on the default rates.

cl_updaterate 100
cl_cmdrate 100
rate 50000

I play with these numbers. Experiment with them. Default number is displayed if you just type the name without a number.

But the fact your graph is moving around like that wouldn't really be a sign of wrong rates. You sure you don't have something running, like torrent/skype/webcam, or someone else on your network?

Aye nothing else.

I made a similar thread a few weeks ago with the same issues but only on the servers you mentioned (MPUK/Jolt/Wireplay). Everything had been fine before so some settings have been changed somewhere (game update, server update, who knows) which broke the game for some people. KingAdora's settings did it for me though, I didn't have any more problems.

I'd definitely go with the Steam support ticket idea (support.steampowered.com) as they were pretty good when I had an issue.

My only problems with TF2 (and HL2: Episode 2 and Gears of War) is the paging pool problem. I'd never encountered it before - something about my physical paging file being too big when playing any of those games. It has to be under 150mb and I see it slowly rising on my second monitor and once it hits 154mb I start to get graphical errors on the menu and scoreboard. It's really rather annoying. It's a real shame as it causes crashes for the games in brackets...... but TF2 I started playing this weekend....what a cracking game - sorry to rub it in.

The support answer on this query was quite comprehensive, though, so maybe they have something for your problem?

It's nearing upgrade time, though, so maybe I'll just wait :)

i bet u use virgin media :D

and normal rates are 30 000 | 100 | 100 not 50 000 OMG !

VM has nothing to do with it. CS: S is fine as are all of my other online games.

I can also ping the TF2 servers from cmd prompt and get great results.

VM has everythign to do with it!

(sorry, ive just had just about enough with VM, id blame it for global warming if I could)

Not for me. I get a regular ping of 20-24 with no spikes - that said I've only played the game for a total of around four hours on maybe six different servers.

I think tf2 is limited to 66 ticks.

What does it say if you type 'rate' in the console?
Sometimes it comes back with text saying the server has limited you to a much lower value (i.e. this is a server I would avoid - badly setup, or it's on a server with several other games using it's resources up).

I would look around on other servers. I get a pretty stable graph with this place : 83.245.62.2:27015

TF2 is limited to 66 tick, so if you set it to anything above this it will always just lower you to 66.

I cant play online games during the daytime or evening as the VM internet is so rubbish. Usually have to wait untill atleast 11pm.

But VM feel its fine as im getting the full 4mbit with 20 pings at some times, its just no good to me when 'sometimes' is between 1 and 7 in the morning!

I have no issues with VM - it's the game.

Well, you could see if you could invite a mate round with his own PC/Laptop :P see if he gets the same problems because if he does then it would show a problem with your connection.

Pinging from windows is sending traffic over a different port to the one that TF2 uses too so its not an ideal test. It does seem odd that you dont get the same problem with CSS though :|
