TFT Black Depth

Over the years I've used/bought many TFT's and have determined that for home pc use, my tft MUST have good black depth. This is because I also use the monitor for movies and I hate watching a dark scene where nothing can be seen.

I am currently using a 20" Philips 200W6CS (correct code number if I recall) and wish to upgrade to a 24" or greater. Can anyone more knowledgable than I, recommend one?

I was almost set on the Dell 2408wfp but the review in the sticky says the black depth is not that great.

I was watching TV in bed last night and realised how bad the black level is on CRTs when the rest of the image is bright. I watch everything in 16:9 on a 4:3 TV so I always have black bars - they frequently change to pretty light grey when a decent amount of white is on the screen.

My LCD has better black levels except when nearly everything is dark.

thats a poor crt then - my gf's is the same but then thats old and knackered. the only things that betters a decent CRT is OLED, but thats expensive and the displays are small. the 'rents old 32" sony trinitron had better black levels than my panasonic pz80 does. id even bet my right leg it was better than anything pioneer have produced.

Most TN panels seem to have a decent black depth - when you're looking at the right angle and from far away. As the viewing angle changes though (particularly when viewing the image from below) it can all fade into a nasty black mush.

Well yes, it's pretty old and cheap, but then that's what most people move to LCD from so, actually, the average black depth doesn't really change much in that transition. I did have a 19" Sony Trinitron once and that was a great monitor but I'd never choose it now over a non-TN LCD.

OLED looks really promising though, I agree there... I planned my current LCD purchase so that when I've gotten a lot of use out of it (3+ years), OLED should be affordable. ;)

My old Sony CRT was the same (G400 or something like that). Black level on a black screen was very good indeed, but even a small bright spot somewhere in a dark image would light up the whole display.

Contrast measured on a black screen vs a white screen would have been very high, contrast measured with half the screen white and the other half black wouldn't have been that impressive at all.

CRTs had better contrast ratios than LCDs, but they aren't even near perfect.

Haven't seen plasma vs CRT side by side, but I wouldn't be suprised if the plasma was better in mixed images.
