I'm in the market for a new screen been looking at 22" tft but not sure which one to opt for that will suit my PC & Xbox 360.

Was thinking of this one;

7 V7L22WD 22" (1680x1050) 5ms 700:1 Silver & Black MultiMedia DVI TFT Monitor

Dell 2007WFP. Works a treat for me.

<edit>

However using the composite connection (as it has no component) it looks VERY bad, kinda worse than ps2 graphics, so I would highly recommend the offical MS VGA cable.

Difference with 20 to 22 inch, is that a 22 inch is 2 inch bigger :p , but the reso's are the same, and on a 20 inch, the pixels are smaller , so the image should be sharper, but you probably wont even notice the difference in sharpness on a 22 inch

All of the 22" WS's have TN panels (poor viewing angles) so unless your going to sit perfectly infront of it at all times it will be annoying, especially if you have friends over to play on your 360. Maybe I am just being fussy though.

For a start you certainly don't have to be sitting perfectly in front of the screen for the picture to look normal, theres quite a lot of "give" before the colours start looking different, and the Samsung has probably the best viewing angles out of all the TN screens out there.

Even if you have multiple people looking at the screen, you rarely look at the screen past a viewing angle of 160 degrees, so viewing angles aren't nearly as important as some people say.

The words 'left myself wide open' springs to mind, lol what would my Maths teacher think of me now, he he

I'm in 2 minds what size screen to go for still, wish my budget would stretch to the 24" dell :( I want to order asap before I set about getting my new PC parts next week.

the 20" WS's have the TN panel as well right? :confused:

Some do some don't. Dell 2007WFP has an IPS panel. Viewsonic VX2025wm has an MVA panel. Generally the 20"ers aroud £200 are TN, the ones over £250 are better panels like IPS/PVA/MVA etc. You can check the viewing angle specs to know what the panel type is. If it's in the 130-160 degrees range it's gonna be TN. If it's more like 170-178 then it's going to be one of the better panels. Or just ask on these forums :)

While this is true, no one should be using the 360 through composite anyway, composite is awful even on the best TV around and doesn't do HD resolutions at all. Even on a low def TV the RGB scart looks way better than the composite. Also these extra s-video/composite inputs on the 2007WFP are just an afterthought really (a bonus), as you say they are bad quality and probably aren't really meant to be used much. 360 through MS VGA cable onto 2007WFP is excellent though as you say.

Except the bad flickering and static snow like effect on gray backgrounds through the 2007 which your forgetting to mention.

I would NOT buy a 2007WFP for the 360. It displays a good picture but the wavy lines/interference through the VGA cable takes the immersion away for me.

This is true, however my 17" TFT with a TN panel was very unforgiving if you moved your head up or down, so most of my friends sitting on my comfy chairs which happened to be rather low were unable to see the screen properly.

I did not notice the wavey lines till someone mentioned it on here a while ago, when looking for it I notice it in call of duty 3, especially when reloading - quite annoying because I can see it now when I never noticed it before!

Those lines are caused by the 360, nothing to do with the monitor. Ask about them on the consoles forum, they're a well known issue with the VGA output on the 360. They're exactly the same on my LG 32" LCDTV, and they are very hard to see on the 2007WFP unless you turn the contrast up way above default (which ruins the picture anyway, contrast should be left on 50 on this screen to dislpay the widest colour gamut). Using my PC through VGA on the 2007WFP and there's no hint of the lines.

I tried the 360 VGA cable on my spare NEC LCD2090UXi. There was no trace of the 'wavey lines' at all. I could not reproduce the problem on this monitor.

Ive not got another monitor to test it on. I have a friend who owns a 20" LG monitor who also connects his 360 through the VGA cable. When he is around i'll take a look and see if his monitor suffers this problem.

Do you have a direct link to any of the threads with this problem? It may be certain hardware suffers more than others. Would be a good idea to compile a list to give people heads up before they part with their money.

Sorry to hijack the thread a little, but I have a couple of questions on a similar line:

1. So if i connect an xbox360 to a 22" (1680x1050), how will it display the picture? will it do 1:1 pixel mapping and upscale the res?, or will it strech the 1,280x720 (720p) image over the res.

2. If it does stretch / or upscale since the native res is 16:10 ratio do you get borders?

3. Is havving a xbox360 running through a PC moniter via VGA the same HD image you would get on a HD:TV i.e 720p with a 360 or is just SD:TV streched / upscaled?

Thanks,

When you connect the xbox 360 cable to your xbox and monitor, you get lots of options in the display settings on the xbox, there are loads of resolutions to chose from, however I find setting it to 1280x1024, and setting the image to "wide", then on my monitor (Dell 2007WFP - 1680x1050) setting it to "fill" it looks very good with no stretching and just a very small border on the top and bottom (about 4mm each). Yes to question number 3, its like 720p on a HD TV, unless your monitor can support 1080p ;)

<edit> the xbox 360 VGA cable I meant *

Have you also got a 2007WFP, and do you notice the lines on default (50) contrast settings? It's just that you only really see the lines on the 2007WFP if you start taking the contrast above default. When I first read about this problem I posted several times in a thread here that my 2007WFP didn't have the problem at all, until someone posted to try turning up the contrast, and then I saw it. So it's such a subtle thing that I didn't even see it on default settings.

I think on the 2007WFP, contrast isn't meant to be used over 50. You'll see as you turn it up the whole colour range gets dramatically compacted and completely ruins the picture, and it also brings out the wavey lines to the point where they are obvious, but like I said earlier, I had a 360 connected to a 2007WFP for months and never noticed the lines at all on default contrast settings. It could be that contrast works differently on different LCDs. On my 2nd monitor - Samsung 172T - I couldn't see the lines at all no matter what settings I used. On my LG 32" LCDTV I can just make out the lines. It must be something to do with how the monitor treats the signal - maybe some screens amplify an anologue signal which would exagerate a poor signal.

There's a few people on the console forum who seem to know all about this problem, so maybe ask them. There was a thread about it here but I can't remember what it was called. Try searching for 2007WFP, 360 and VGA.

I'm probably going to go for a Dell monitor now, really was hoping to get a 22" and have seen this

Dell E228WFP 22" ?

Will this be as good as the 2007WFP ????

Going to order one today as I can't wait any longer (money burning hole, lol)

It uses a TN panel so the viewing angles won't be as good as the 2007WFP, whether that matters or not is up to you. It also won't as sharp because of the bigger pixels but that is hardly noticeable.
