I thought tft's would put a lot less strain on my eyes compared to my cft.

So , i bought an asus 22" monitor and ran it at its native res (1680x1050) @ 60hz

But its putting so much strain on my eyes .. Will i get used to it or should i go back to my crt?

Yeah, as with LCDTVs the default brightness on TFTs is set so they'll look good on display in a shop, but it's often way too bright for real extended use. You just need to experiment and find the right brightness level for you.

Can anyone post there setup for the 22" asus?

I can't seem to get it looking nice without giving me a bad headache :(

I share your pain, literally..

I also got the Asus 22" yesterday and im having the same problem with eye strain. This is my first TFT so maybe im missing something. The desktop seems very bright with default settings and when i lower the brightness games seem too dark.

No, the refresh rate could be 1Hz for a LCD and it wouldn't flicker any more than the backlight...an LCD is not like a CRT where you're struggling to keep the image on the screen, with an LCD you struggle to remove it again.

Start with the brightness low and increase it as you get used to how an LCD looks. LCD has different characteristic visuals and you should adjust without much fuss.

I'll go as far to conject a little...with a CRT I feel like I'm squinting at the screen, with an LCD I feel like I have to relax my eyes. Once you're adjusted you'll probably know what I mean.

It shouldn't be flickering at all at 60 Hz, or at any other refresh rate for that matter.

As for brightness, you'll find on most TFTs you need to turn the brightness down for web/apps/windows and back up for games, especially when you first get them. Nothing to worry about there, I've had the same thing with all my TFTs.

Some monitors, for example my SyncMaster 204TS 20.1" and SyncMaster 940BF 19" have a 'brightness preset' button. This simply changes the brightness with about 5 different presets, including a custom one. I have set the custom one to pretty much full brightness for gaming, but when just browsing the net or in windows, I turn it right down and set it to "Internet".

Does your monitor have this? Its worth using if it has, certainly reduces eye strain by a mile!

I'v been on the pc for 2mins.. and already my eyes are starting to hurt after looking at the monitor.

I have the brightness all the way down and it still doesnt help.

Very good feature, my samsung 21tw also has it. All monitors should have this feature aswell.

Have you guys used the Nvidea setup aswell as the monitor settings , been playing for 15mins and almost found the optimum!!! Not on an ASUS mind you, a much much cheaper 22".

Looks like im going to have to go back to my 17" CRT... :(

I was really looking forward to having the perfect monitor :(

Try using different refresh rates, when I put mine on to 75Hz from 60Hz i find it harder to read font, although my eyes never actually start hurting.

Ive just gone back to default everything on monitor and driver and then just set the gamma to 0.75 in Nvidia colour correction panel. My games where looking really poor earlier and it was because i had reduced the brightness and contrast so much to try and avoid the eye strain. My games are looking a hell of a lot better now, ill have to see about the eye strain tomorrow.

I also noticed heavy ghosting in Oblivion when it was dark, when light i couldnt see any.

If you're not happy with it get your money back via the Distance Selling Regulations, or even pay a restocking fee if you have to. No point keeping a monitor you're that unhappy with.

It's very odd to see several people all saying a screen is too bright, so it sounds like it could be a genuine problem, and for some reason it can't be fixed with the brightness controls like other TFTs. On all the TFTs I've owned you can just turn the brightness down to CRT levels.

Could also search the web to see if it's a widespread problem with that screen.
