Hi,

I did as some of you know install ubuntu 8.10 a while back as i was absolutely fed up of windows. I then had some problems with my graphics and a few others that forced me to go back to windows.

Well... after seeing the linuxmint post , i decided it was time to try that and WOW!

Everything works perfectly including my graphics. I personally think linuxmint is better than ubuntu as it seems slightly more polished in areas and runs just as fast.

yeh good for u. I moved from suse to ubuntu, then mint when i was a n00bie. Linux does seem more polished, but is basically the same

When ur settled into linux, depending how far down the rabbit hole u wanna go, you could try arch linux or whatever

Not off the top of my head, im still using windows more as I cant shake the habit of online gaming :/ so i forget/dont know as much about linux as i should lol.

Alt-F2 -> type gconf-editor -> apps -> nautilus -> desktop -> edit trash_icon_visible -> true

It's an ugly operation I admit. Gconf-editor is rubbish IMO.

Before i went into that i just had the computer and home shortcut. I went into this and did what you said , and now none are on the desktop?

It's not better at all, it just does more for you - lazy sod!

I like tweaking a default Ubuntu install and adding (and uninstalling) those items I need to make a sweet install. It doesn't take long at all
