so im beginning planning for my new build i thought id have a quick look on a certain well known auction site at complete build systems.

The deals seem too good to be true and Squids law says 'if its too good to be true it aint true.'

I dont want to link direct cause i dont want to get moderated 3 posts into my time here  - what gives? Do these deals look legit to you?

From what I've seen, other than the CPU and perhaps graphics, everything else is pretty much cheap and unbranded.

You can build a very cheap machine that sounds good on paper.... and may even perform well but long term you are better spending a little extra for known brands

Well you usually get what you pay for. I would stick to your saying and give it a a miss ;) I just built a system for my dad cost me very little to get the components for the base. Comparing it to a pre-built setup I've saved quite a bit of cash..

Mate had one of these "unknown" computer and within a month it didnt work.
Ended up the PSU was faulty but ended up buying half a new system to replace it with which cost him a two thirds of what the original machine cost, but he impressed by the performance he got the same cash and he has no overclocked if a fair bit so all is good.

Moral of the story buy the decent stuff as it more likely to work longer and better quailty in the first place and you dont end up buying equipment twice.

The PSU will be a £10 special . . Yes, it will run it, but for how long? Will it explode after a month. The mobo will be a basic cheap as chips model and probably will not be upgradeable or have many configurable options (Such as overclocking etc). Ram, again, cheapest. Hard drive - will be a maxtor . . nuff said. And who says all the components are brand spanking new?

A friend of mine at work bought a pre build from that auction site and it did actually come with an asus motherboard. It was a very cheap build and its lasted him 3 years so far lol! Although I have upgraded the graphics for him.

warranties are awful too, you normally don't get the product manufacturer warranties and just a 12 month return to base one with whatever mickey mouse seller its from. I say stay away.

NO NO NO NO..... they are indeed selling unbranded or "SPARKLE" style items.. but it will not blow up at all.. if you know how to put a PC together then its fine and you can get a good cheap high end gamer pc for cheap.

for warranties a 12 month RTB warranty is not bad at all.. you have to pay extra in a competitor to have the nerds come round to see why your pc has stopped working.

you dont have to spend a fortune on bits like these boys do... they just like wasting money... you can stil buy pre built bargains off such sites for cheap as chips and put perform overclocked bit waggons easy.

As mentioned, cost cutting.

They may have 8GB of unbranded OEM RAM, a chinese 1000w PSU that costs £10, etc.

There are obviously proper high end ones too but the really cheap ones can be nasty.

Hardly wasting money to be fair . . you wouldnt put £10 tyres on a rally car or a racing car would you? Same principle applies.
We dont dent there are bargains to be had, but telling them apart from the terrible cheap builds is difficult without more information.

mmm i do sell there when in need of cash, buitl to order, i use unbranded slow ram, antec 380W PSU, cheap case, cheapest gfx i can find (normally cheapest 9800GT) i use as many sites with free postage as possible, to get different components for cheap builds.

mobo is very cheap, normally single chanel, with 2 slots for ram and Matx mobo.

cheapest HDD and dvd burner, and i charge extra for cable management, so if they dont choose it, i just leave everything in the middle of the case next to the window.

Agree with the others, you get what you pay for. Build one yourself with parts from OcUK which are usually quality with plenty of support from people on the forums.

You have to be careful as half of the ones you will find on there do not have vat included in the price.

So you might see a cheap computer, buy it then be suprised as they will then charge you vat on top.

You have to read the text very carefuly.

The forums are nothing to do with the shop (that's official). Buy good bits from wherever they are cheapest. If that's OcUK then all well and good. The forums support will be the same.

That's not entirely true is it? I mean even if someone is looking for something OcUK don't stock, you're not allowed to tell them where to get it.

Yes, but you're also not allowed to complain about the shop either:p

Just a heads up on this sellers are no longer allowed to apply VAT to the price quoted/won at checkout any longer Vat must be included within the listing this is now part of the Site's new rules and has been for a few months now.
However i do agree that a lot of the bundles available there are using very cheap ram and unnamed mobo's
there are a few there that are using quality components but price wise they are not much cheaper than purchasing the same bits from OCuk
with the extra you pay on OCuk you have better product support
