Ok, my brother is looking for his first car. He 25 y.o. so insurance is going to be a bit cheaper, but hes looking to be paying no more than about £500 so lets keep them low (just to let you have some idea, he had a quote on a 306 TD TPFT, that came out at about £450). He going to be using it to drive to work, only about 40 miles a day, but thats a fair bit, so would like to keep fuel prices as low as possible. Hes been looking at 306 DT for around the suggested price but there all quite thin on the ground at that price and he needs it in a hurry really.

So what would you suggest? Cheap to run. Cheapish to insure. Good little runner of a first car. Would like a 3 door also if possible, would like to stay away from the Mondeo end of the market.

Any other questions then please ask.

Thanks people.

He's gonna be doing what 12k miles a year, the difference in cost between a diesel and a petrol in terms of fuel economy will be virtually nothing.

If he 'just wants a nice little runner of a first car' he sounds like the ideal candiate for an overpriced Saxo 1.1 or something :)

You do always say this dont you (about the diesel), lol. So how may MPG do you get from a 306 TD and how many form a 306 1.6?

Oh, and even my bro is to cool for a 1.1 saxo ;) :D

I had a Xantia with the same 1.9TD engine, I got about 40 when sat at 70. A 1.6 Petrol will get anywhere between 30-40 tbh. You'd save about £100-£200 a year in fuel with the diesel.

But, by going petrol you could pay less for the car outright, less tax too. It also might be newer or have more equipment.

I would have thought that the difference in economy would have been bigger. I have a 306 TD and I think its great on fuel, but to be fair I havent had any other car.

When it comes to petrol Vs diesel, it really depends on the car's and engine sizes..

If you want fuel economy, then a small petrol 1.1/1.4 saxo type car will see you right for around 40MPG..

However, you could get a 2.0 Turbo Diesel in a much bigger car and still get over 40MPG..

My veccie, if I set the cruise at 70 (for as long as I can bear going that slow), I do get 50MPG+..... My rover 420SDi I got 50-55MPG as well...

If I was looking at small 3 door stuff, I'd agree with Fox that the petrol Vs diesel is not so clear cut, depends on the journey type, and driving style..

ok, but I get the same economy from my 306 TD as I would in say a 1.1 saxo, there or there about esp. down the motorway. But I bet my car is nicer to drive, faster and bigger. Would you agree with that?

2000 CITROEN Xsara 1.9 Turbo Diesel,
W reg. 48000 miles, metallic green, fsh, 3dr, e/windows, e/sunroof, remote alarm, pas, MoT/tax, very economical, reliable, a one off bargain at. £1,495. No offers

Do they even do a 3dr TD?

AFAIK - the only 3dr's were VTR's and VTS', there may also have been a 3dr West Coast, but these were MK2. They did a HDi VTR, but again MK2 and out of your budget.

Ok, thanks. Thats what a quick google was pointing towards, so what is this then miss print maybe?

Thanks

That particular one is a little confusing though as Citroen replaced the 1.9TD engine with the 2.0 HDi in 1999... thats a 2000..

It says "a one off bargin" maybe thats what it means? :D
