Thatcham Cat 1 alarm

Hiya,

How do I prove to my insurance people that my car has a Cat 1 Thatcham approved alarm fitted?

They've asked for a certificate but my car came with it factory fitted. They claim it doesn't show up on their system. The only thing I've got to prove it has one (aprt from the alarm under the bonnet!) is the user guide that came with the car. This doesn't have anything that links it to my car individually.

anyone got any ideas?

No certificate of installation, no discount.

Do you know the name of the system and how do you know it's Thatcham CAT 1?

it was factory fitted

The booklet that cmae with the car says "Thatcham Cat 1" on the front. It's a Sigma c30 (possibly different name, don't have details to hand)

You need to go to an installers and get them to check it and give you an installation certificate.

I didn't have one for mine so that's all I did. Doesn't cost much.

Generally speaking most alarms that come factory fitted insurers would know about anyway.
I have had several cars in the past - Mazda, Golfs , BMW Minis, that have had cat 1 factory fitted alarms, and the insurance conpany already know that they have a cat 1 fitted.
I have had an aftermarket Clifford Cat1 fitted to my Rover Mini and I got a certificate to prove one had been fitted.
I think you may have a hard time convincing the insurance company.

What car is it exactly?

If you just say it has a non-Thatcham alarm, they probably won't care anyway.

Subaru Forester Turbo. (with a cat 1 alarm as standard

) It's on the vehicle details on the parkers website as fitted as standard

Mainly it's not the actual alarm that is fitted but it's about the actual fitting of it, the cat 1 alarms are only valid if fitted by a thatcham approved fitter and the will provide the certificate

Factory fit alarms can qualify for Thatcham Cat 1 Status as well, it depends on whether the vehicle manufacturer has had it tested by Thatcham.

Factory fit (not dealer fit) automatically qualify if they have been tested.

You insurance company needs to get its system updated

I had a similar problem with my Accord, the insurance company insisted on a cert even though it was factory fitted. I even rang up Thatcham who confirmed the details but the insurance company wouldn't have it, so went elsewhere in the end.

Ditto, never found it to actually make a difference, so even though my s-class alarm possibly is thatcham, its easier to just select "factory fitted" and leave it at that.

A VSIB/MESF certificate for your security system.

Do you not have to inspect the system first? This seems a bit dodgy tbh.

not for a factory installed system.. only for an after market system
