That’s it for Firefox 2… Update to Firefox 3 Today!

Mozilla is not planning any further security & stability updates for Firefox 2, and recommends that you upgrade to Firefox 3 as soon as possible. It’s free, and your settings and bookmarks will be preserved.

Also, the Phishing Protection service will no longer be available for Firefox 2 users. Firefox 3 offers a free Phishing and Malware Protection service, which will continue to protect you from online scams and attacks.
I just updated to 2.0.0.19 and got this message :(

I don't like Firefox 3 for various reasons and am disappointed that they are apparently forcing me to 'upgrade' to it.

The lack of Phishing protection is a Google issue too. Fx2 uses an old version of the SafeBrowsing protocol which Google doesn't want to offer any more.

You're not being forced to upgrade though. Other than another couple of offers, you won't be made to upgrade. It's like arguing MS should offer the same level of updates for, say, Windows 2000.

Ok, MS EOL'd Windows 98. Did you cry for that? Probably not since you could get a newer supported version. This is even better since the new version won't cost you a dime.

What are your problems with Fx3? Maybe we can help you sort those out. Heck, the speed increase between the two was enough to convert me! :p

Try 3.1 beta 2 - it has a bunch of tweaks to the behaviour of the Smart Location Bar (including preferences to restrict the data it searches) that might help. That said, your previous argument was "I don't like it, I don't want to modify my behaviour [even if it means I'm doing more to get the same results] and I don't want to give it the time to learn", so that might be a waste of time.

Not per se but it seems early to drop support for Firefox 2 to me.

For a product released in October 2006 whose successor (whose successor will be released within a few months) was released 6 months ago?

The not very awesome bar, mostly. I hate it.

Love it myself - can just enter a couple of words from the title of a webpage article I read, and it'll dig it up in the history without issue. No arsing about trying to find the exact url instead. Anyway, I think there's a setting or extension to revert it to the old method.

With 3.1 in development and due soon for release I'm not too surprised TBH.

I personally didn't like 3.0/3.1 on first look but it's sort of grown on me now.

Most software series are like that, they end up dropping support for older versions, for obvious reasons.

I don't see what is so bad about Firefox 3 though.

So what about the thousands of customers that have bought linux netbooks that come with FF2. This will be a security issue won't it? The Aspire One for example won't let the owner update the browser, you need to use the terminal windows and type code into it. essentially hacking the system, and even then it can mess up the OS. The majority of people that have bought netbooks won't have the first idea how to do this and will be stuck with FF2. Unless Acer release an update that includes FF3 I can see this being a security issue. But on the other hand if its a linux box it will be less susceptible to viruses maybe? I don't know.

Always amazes me that something is free and yet someone can complain!

I really didn't like the search in the address bar thing (seeing 1000 different web addresses actually annoys me) but on the other hand I really have grown to much prefer FF3 over 2.
