Whilst Vista has it's niggles, it has nothing on the kind of scale you (or many of the others in this thread) are suggesting.
I went back to XP, simply because of the "large file" bug - where working with a huge file would make explorer crash. Apparantly it's now been fixed anyway.
Sounds to me like there's something wrong with your laptop and you're just looking for a simple answer.
