*** The 2013 Gym Rats Thread ***

I might be misreading but I think what Zefan is pointing out is that Stronglifts 5x5 is more aimed at building strength rather than size. I don't think it was a comment about doing a little bit of cardio as well. Obviously size and strength aren't entirely mutually exclusive but certain programmes emphasise one area of development over the other.

5x5 isn't just a strength routine and shouldn't be thought of as just strength focussed. 25 working reps is a decent amount of volume and any of Bill Starr's 5x5 routines should build strength and mass where there is a calorie surplus.

The reason 5x5 works so well for novices is because it forces you to add weight rather than cranking out set after set of innumerable exercises each week and not getting any stronger, like the program he posted.

Some good pointers cheers, the switch is mostly just for a change & to see what kind of exercise routine I prefer (while knowing it's not going to be 100% optimal for my intended results) - more to keep it interesting.

Want to do a month of that to burn off the last bit of fat, then a few months on a surplus & see what kind of gains I've made - then most likely move back to a compound based system.

A few minutes of HIIT a day doesn't seem too bad so far, I recover from it reasonably quickly now I've been doing it 3 times a week for the last couple of months - the only difference would be that I'd not have wrecked legs when I started on a few of the days.

But you may be right, so I'd drop some of the HIIT if it proved too much.

I'm sitting at just under 12 stone now, so don't have that much to loose to get to a reasonable body-fat percentage to start bulking.

this, you can gain size with SS's but the routine is focused on strength so while you do get bigger if you eat properly, mass gains won't be as big if you went a body building routine..

and cardio.. eh i have 80ish mins of it everyday! :o

I wasn't being entirely serious. It just sounded funny :p I think he might get good results swapping up to an 8866 routins or something similar to what Skillmister, Stoidles and Monkee do. He already said he's been doing SL a while and fancies changing, a bit of periodisation might do him the world of good both physically and mentally.

Sissy squats, tbh.
