The absolute best mouse? (Not necessarily for gaming)

It's about time for a new mouse. For the last 4-5 years I've used the same Gyration Ultra but now it is aging and the contacts for the wheel button are getting poor.

I don't do that much gaming, I certainly don't do any competitive/online gaming where I'd need some ultra-low sensitivity mouse. I have my mouse on very high sensitivity normally (a necessity with a 3200x1200 desktop) - such that I can move it over the entire width of the desktop in 3 inches or so.

What I want is a mouse which will be very comfortable and will last a very long time. I have a 'thing' against logitech because of the stories my friends have told, whats more their mice seem quite tacky & poorly built. I don't know what mice there are nowadays or what is any good. I do not rest my entire hand on the mouse & move with my arm/wrist, I tend to hold the mouse with my fingertips and move it by moving my fingers.

I don't mind paying a lot, so long as it's the best.

My requirements:

- Comfortable
- Cordless
- Has a rechargeable battery & docking/charging cradle
- Good build quality/will last a long time

Can anyone help me out? Even just by pointing me to a UK place that sells high-end mice for people who use them a lot in their jobs?

Thanks.

Are you confident that the G7 would last at least 3 years? Its just that I have heard from several friends who have had MX1000s and G5's that they have had problems within months, occasionally rendering them useless. Whats more it seems like it has features which I'm just not interested in that I'd be paying extra for, like that DPI changer doodad.

I think you have to go a long way to beat microsoft mice for longevity (sp?), im still using an intellimouse explorer from when they first came out 7-8 years ago

To the last two posters: neither of the mice you mentioned are cordless are they? I'm after a cordless one.

peter7 - I said I didn't need something with very high sensitivity like that; it would be like buying an F1 car to commute to work in - it might be highly specced but I'd never use it and it would likely be uncomfortable. It's paying for something I don't want or need.

k3v - I once had one of the intellimouse explorers but the wheel got all jammed up within a couple of years.

I suppose I'm looking for the Rolls Royce of mice, not the Ferrari :D

mine has been used at work in my last 3 jobs for CAD and has had some hammer apart from the silver paint wearing off, its in perfect working condition. Either ive been lucky or you were unlucky. I bought a cordless version of it to replace it a couple of years ago but i could'nt get on with the tilt/scroll wheel so i reverted back and its still going strong

Is the left and right mouse button on a g7 softer to click than the logitech mouse that comes with the dinovo media desktop keyboard? They look exactly the same. I use my dinovo keyboard but i use a microsoft wireless intellimouse explorer because the buttons are bigger and easier to push. After a day using the logitech mouse my joints feel like they are going to explode... I too need a new mouse, but with pain in my fingers it just has to have the easiest left and right mouse button to press or i just cant use it.

It's obviously not "the best available," but I've been using a Logitech MX518 for ages now and I absolutely love it. I can't see myself ever replacing it unless it breaks. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. :)

logitech all the way - diamondbacks may have great tracking but they feel like No swearing! since its designed to be ambidextrous whereas logitech's are perfectly sloped to fit right handed people.

You dont seem to be making much sense

It's called a mistake; there's no need to be like that. I meant that I use it on very high sensitivity so it moves a long way when I move my hand, but I don't need a great degree of accuracy.

i've been using my mx510 since it came out & its fine but may need some new teflon strips lol :)
I bought one of the Destrukt mats with mine when I bought it from OcUK, the little mouse feet haven't worn the slightest bit yet. :D

Yep, I would say the MX 1000 as well, having used Microsoft's wired versions and other wireless offerings from Logitech, the best all rounder I would say is the MX 1000.
Battery life, feel, functionality etc, spot on. Currently trying a G7 for gaming, which I have to admit responds a little better than the MX1000 and having the variable DPI helps, but I do so miss my MX1000 for every day work, I am seriously considering reverting back.
