The Acer ONE Thread

What is he doing 1 min and 1 second into it? What's that pointing at and what am i supposed to do to that bit he's waving the screw driver to ?
ZIF socket for the keyboard ribbon.

I added a 512mb module to my one yesterday.

Easy to take apart, pain in the arse to re-assemble.

The plastic clips that hold the keyboard in got jammed inside the frame so i had to carefully work them back out with some tiny screwdrivers.

I've since read that using a credit card on them is a safer bet. I used a plastic ipod opening tool.

I've ordered the RAM now, so i'll do it later this week.

Now that i've watched 4 videos, the best one the guy actually removed the daughter board on the right side......just above where the wifi switch is, why did he do that?

Also, that's another about adding ram that i am scared about, putting it back together, there are no videos for that ! I guess i just have to be really systematic when pulling it apart and work myself backwards slowly, might even need to take pictures before i unscrew anything. Also, did you have any problems of putting the rubber feet back on ? Or are they not the same now that it's been removed once?

oh, what is it like now with more RAM with Windows 7 ?

Managed to Pick up the 512mb/120gb Linux model for my sons Birthday tomorrow.

I need to install XP on it via a USB Stick while he is at school, is this the guide that everybody uses ?

Please post if you have installed a different way, or anything that you really need to do or not to do.

I really don’t want to mess up his New Birthday Pressie.

Thanks Dutch

External DVD drive, install it like you are on a pc with a CD. I used a Xbox 360 HD-DVD rom add on, it recognise as a Toshibha DVD rom in the bios, just change boot priority and off it goes.

Easy as pie.

Is it best to format the 120gb linux with NTFS ? Before installing XP

I've just tested these and they're working. No problems at all unlike the previous drivers. I havent tested for long periods of time so unsure if they drop out etc but so far they're great.

How did you install that driver? My Windows 7 kept saying the driver they have is the latest thus cannot update?

I didnt have that problem. When I first loaded Win7 it didnt pick up the wireless adapter so I rebooted and it picked it up correctly using Windows builtin drivers, then I updated using the new drivers. Either try rebooting then try again or force the driver to install (I cant remember the exact precedence but it's there! just make sure you note the exact model number because you'll need to choose from a list of all support models)

Well what can I say, my son was well pleased with his new birthday present and a nice bonus it was the 160GB model :D

Got XP installed this morning off a USB Pen drive was quite painless following the video.

Overall impressions are really good seems plenty fast enough, only thing you could probably fault is the 2hr battery, but at this price you certainly cant complain ;)

Thanks Dutch

Just got back from purchasing a 8gb model from the high street and have noticed 4 dead and 2 stuck green pixels :( is this enough to warrant getting a replacement?

Hey,

Got one of these for mum as a Birthday present.

It's got the default linux OS on it at the moment. However the basic programs such as Firefox 2 and email client are not feature rich enough for her. Is there a linux OS that allows for a lot more customisation, while still retaining a basic desktop? My mum does like the fact that there is just big icons and as soon as it boots up it tells her if she has email from the icon.

If not I suppose I will install XP on it. I have a spare licence but I was wondering if people are using a custom install or are you just installing everything?

Ubuntu Netbook Remix is a good start, I've used it shortly ages ago and it was good. Not sure how fully it supports the Acer One but there will be drivers somewhere on the Acer One Forums or Ubuntu Forums http://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/nbr

Standard install of XP is fine, runs pretty well. You can nlite if you wish but you really dont need it, it's snappy enough.
