Looking at the Black Ops trailer with its shiney new graphics, AI physics etc, it got me wondering about the development of games in general.

Do you think that the big companies out there like Sony have actually got the technology right now that they could release that would make the PS3 look like a megadrive in comparison? By this I mean that is it possible that they only release consoles and hold some technology back so as to increase market sales later on when they release yet onother new console to their range, and in doing so increasing the companies financial position and their ability to be market leaders.

Do you ever think that there will come a time when console games will look as though you are controlling actors in a movie because the graphics will be that good?

I remember when my uncle popped on Sega Rally Championship for the first time and I said that the graphics almost looked photo realistic :o I was blown away by the original GT game when it first game out too. I'm sure graphics will reach a peak one day and the whole emphasise will be on add ons such as 3D goggles that allow you to look around in real time at the screen withought having to use the controller for that and just keeping it for controlling weapons and vehicals only. A wee suit that you wear that gives you a jolt when you get shot would be cool to get you right immersed into the action too.

Any thouhgts peeps?

Yes! There will come a time..its now! ..Well..sort of. They have the technology to make photrealistic graphics. There was a video online a few years ago showing it in action! It doesnt use the same wireframe as we use now it uses some sort of... Okay you guessed it i DONT know what im talking about lol I do know tho it takes dev's YEARS to program about an hour of gameplay tho >< and needs a super computer to run it :( Maybe some one can link the vid?
Even withnot using this technology direct 11 has/will really change the ways game look. Dx 10 was more about shadows while the 11 version adds tessellation which REALLY changes the way games look.
So do sony have the technology to do this .. YES... but can they release it? No :( Not right now nore on the ps4. (or even ps5 and 6) Youll see it first on the pc! :D

I honestly belive in 10-15 years time we will be playing games not with controllers but our hands/bodies (like the x box kinect..but it will work :P ) Gamers are allready wanting something new compared to the controllers of years gone by. Look at how well the wii has done! Even ps3 has got in on the act with their move!

P.s heres the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-ATtrImCx4 You cant tell but with that type of technology, You can have ultimate realisim. Its just going to take a few years to get to us :(

the industry is at a point where dev times are min 2 year cycles, these games cost millions to produce and while a lot of moeny is spent on design and testing a lot more is spent on production of assets and tech, it doesnt actually make market sense to bring out new hardware and esculate production costs when projects are risky enough at the moment.

Conspiricy much?

Competition is so fierce at the moment. If one company had the ability to do this, we'd know about it. They'd be hyping it up by the bucket load.

By the very nature of a closed platform and the time it takes to develop when its released theres already technology out there that is more powerful. Its very unlikely to think that while in development that Sony/MS decided to hold back on spec (other than building to the unit price they were after) so theyll have something for the next gen when they know technology would have made leaps and bounds by then...

Stuff a consumer can get for a PC now is a good demonstration - so the techs out there.

ps3ud0

I think this is absolutely right.

The technology is already available to dwarf the PS3 graphics, you could take the technology used to make Avatar and design games from it, however that 2 hour movie cost nearly $300 million and took years to make, a game needs to be at least twice that long.

It's just not cost effective to make games that detailed. Plus you need to add in the cost of the hardware, both Sony and MS make a monetary loss on hardware sales and make it up the profit difference in software. They're not in any rush to design and release a new console which won't generate profits for years.

I've also heard (not sure if its true or not) but sony are only just making a profit! (4 years in? maybe 5 years in ><) I think 'move' will DEFF help them out. They just need to start advertiseing it.. :S I honestly think the people who bought (then sold the wii because of lack of intresting games) would be intrested in the ps3 version 'move'
