The advent of 4K monitors, great, but what about game texture resolution?

So like light to flies PC users are drawn to 4K and why not, it's one of the best current uses of 4K in my opinion with the standard still not well, standardised for TV use and lack of content. The distance we use monitors at will likely have more of an impact than the average TV size of 40-50''.

So ignoring archaic 30hz refresh rates (why is that? limitation of connections?), game textures are not 4K native, is picture quality really going to look better?

Will games look deeper as can discern further into the distance than before?

I think it's the future, but I can't help but feel its gonna be Q4 this year or into 2015 before 4k is adopted in any significant numbers.

Yes image quality will be better. Mostly will have sharper look and most vivid representation of colours due to Igzo tech used on the highest end panels. High res texture packs for many games are a standard nowadays so expect more even higher end ones. Games like Skyrim have 4k texture mods already. Games will look "deeper" as you say because of higher possible FOV (before you get fishbowl effect) and more PPI (pixels per inch) = more clean image so yes you get the possibility for more detailed backgrounds when comparing to a lower resolution screen of the same size.

The problem of 30Hz refresh is due to HDMI not being good enough and every monitor maker forcing themselves to it. DP is perfectly fine for 60Hz 4K, just as it is for 1440p 120Hz (eg upcoming Asus RoG monitor) which has the same bandwidth as 4k 60Hz. The upcoming HDMI (I think called v2) will certainly support 4k 60Hz.
