ive just put a new build toghether and want to know if pro is really worth the extra money for a gamer. was a user of 2000 Pro (legit too :D) and one of the mian reason i moved to XP was i use external voice comms as 2000 wouldnt let me use both ingame voice chat and external (teamspeak/ventrillo)

heres my setup and uses:

gaming (a lot)
broadband via router
networked to 2 PC's and 2 Laptops
do encript files on occasions (rarely)
general browsing and online shopping
chat (xfire/MSN)

will pro really benifit me

Pro is only really useful if you're running on a domain, running dual CPU, etc. Personally I run Home on all of my machines at home ;).

hello, buy mce 2005 cheaper than pro, just abit more than home and you dont have to use the mce bit at all.

But it's not a "full version" of XP Pro in that it doesn't let you connect to a domain.

Look, from what the OP is saying, there's absolutely no reason whatsoever for needing anything more than XP Home. Why the big obsession with getting Pro just because it sounds better?

the pc im networking to is runnin 2000 Pro
and the 2 laptops are running home, never had any problems on the laptops, not noticed i couldnt do anything i needed to....

stil on the fence, pro seams like it doesnt do much (for me specifically) except say pro :D but homes always had a bad rep

also wouldnt i have compatabity issues with MCE as im an avid gamer

All dual core processors are supported. This is a non-issue. :)

Pro is a superior version of XP. For a list of the differences between them, check this site out.

I don't know why but i've always found Pro easier to use, just setting up anything network related seems to be so much smoother.

Maybe i'm just being an idiot :/

Well, no offence, but tell me what exactly the difference is?

Just with sharing files over the home network, on Home, it always bleats on about permissions, and I can never set it up to just work

With Pro, I tell it what to share and it just happens, no permissions to set, passwords, anything. Another computer types in my network IP address and the shared folder pops up.

Meh, it's probably just me :)

[Edit] Typo...

The only reason Pro is so popular is because all the warez/gaming kiddies pirate it so obviously the cost isn't an issue! There's naff all point paying for something that makes no difference to you whatsoever.

pro has some webserver and database stuff in it, cant remember the exact term,

All i'm saying is i first of all bought oem home (i've used 2 copies now) and then discovered mce 2005 for not much more, i think mce has much more potential, you never know in the end your mate might want to put in a dvb-t card etc.

Yes home does the job, its fine but mce has more potential, plus most of the benefits of pro.
