If you have XP then a 3rd party firewall is a must.

What's wrong with the XP built in FW?

Doesn't monitor outgoing connections for a start, I'm not the one to moan about firewalls in general a firewall is a firewall and there's not much between them but in XP's case it's very outdated.

Personally, I don't see the point in an outgoing FW, you've already had your system compromised if you see outgoing traffic that you don't recognise. Prevention is better than cure.

I don't like symantec av but why can't you use the 32bit version?

I think I have managed to get rid of it all, but was a bit spooked to see the above appear in my list of recently installed programs, as i am certain I didn't give permission for them to install.

Perhaps not explicitly but it was probably bundled a part of another installer. I doubt any change of AV will change this.
