Ok, so Im seeing some posts elsewhere that make me believe there are some upgrades being planned, so I thought Id start a thread so we can have somewhere to discuss and show off our shiny new hardware.
I believe Mr toxic is planning some watercooled gpu loveliness and Im going for a major new build.

Sod cost/value/performance ratio's, Im going to upgrade and go for a x79 system - not cheap and the build will be staged as it is expensive. The only decisions that are definite so far are...

CPU = i7 3930 which seems to have jumped £100 since I first started watching it :mad:

mobo will probably be Asus sabertooth x79, though I might go for the P9X79 PRO as that is getting good reviews as well

RAM will be 2 x 16GB GSkill kits as I want 32Gb :p

2 x Crucial 128Gb M4's in Raid 0

Noctura DH14 2011 CPU cooler

Lepa 900W Gold certified PSU

I have a spare 2Tb drive for storage.

Will use a 470 that Im going to RMA as temporary gfx until next gen nvidia come out

I have the cooler, PSU, SSD's and RAM in a Amazon wishlist that I have pointed the missus to, so hopefully she will get me a couple of bits which will bring down the cost

Still need to decide on the case
TJ07
Corsair 800D
Cosmos S 2

or if I air cool

Antec P280

Still undecided about watercooling, the x79 chipset gets hot when overclocked and I have seen posts recomending air coolers as they cool the chipset. Will have to make up my mind as it will stop me getting a case until I know which way Im going to go..

So that lot is my planned next build, feel like splashing out as my pc is over 5 yrs old and I want a better rig and 32Gb of RAM..

Toxic - over to you now mate :p

Will do...

To be honest, if I was upgrading and had more re-usable parts, Id have gone SB/Z68 as price vs performance is great.
But when I priced up a completely new build, there was only 3-400 quid in it between SB and SB-E, so it seemed a waste not to spend the extra and go for SBE and upgrade to IB-E in 2013. That way I can have a machine that will last a few years yet..

 I believe by e-pene has just shrivelled into hibernation :(

Hundreds and hundreds of pounds going on a superduperrig but the big questions are still to be answered ...

1. Did you get the missus a tree or did you forget?
2. Whats this masterpiece pic your preparing ( please feel free to forget so i can bring down the festive ban hammer on you christmas eve Mr Sandy Bridge Extreme):mad::(:o:p;):D

Mine will be as follows

WD RE2 500gb to 60gb SSD, undecided which one yet

XSPC 750 Dual bay pump/res combo -> Laing DDC & XSPC Plexi top (£30 off the bay :))

XSPC Delta -> XSPC Raystorm or EK Supreme HF Nickle Plexi

EK or Phobya tube res

Back to 1/2" barbs & 7/16" tubing from 3/8" tubing and compressions, had a couple of 45 degree fittings leak during a rebuild so now using half and half.

EK Supreme VGA HF for the GTS450

and possibly Phenom II x4 @ 4ghz to Thuban depending on how much my car insurance renewal is.

Frozen,
The corsair M4's are getting good reviews at the moment?
Watercooling a GTS450 - now that is hardcore!

Haven't forgotten the pic toxic, but will actually take one of our tree and post it as there is no need for a cheat pic now.
Was planning to take a pic of a 6" minature tree and try to pass it off as a full size one with some trickery, but it is too much effort

As for e-peen, if you saw my home machine, you would know why Im building a decent rig - it is a dual Pentium 830D, and that is before dual core cpu's, we are talking 2 seperate cpu's here, and an IDE HDD :(:(:(
I've finally given up swearing at it and decided to do something about it, and that means money...

All in the name of silence sah.

The XPSC is doing my head in, buzzes like a good un' and the GTS450 sounds like its going to take off, even with a custom fan profile.

Its all being crammed into my trusy Antec 300 as well, which shall be getting some minor mods to make it prettier.

Almost forgot I may shoe horn a 1.140 rad in the roof to go with the 120.2 a the front and the 120.1 at the rear.

Ta for the tip of the crucials. Theyre a little above what I wanted to spend unfortunatly, got my eye on the OCZ Agility 3 at the moment.

Awww blinking 'eck you got me thinking twice now, even though i have made a start on my watercooled machine i feel like chucking it now its good and all but Mr E for extreme argghhhhhh am going to sit have a few mugs of cha and come back to the table in a while. If i lay all my cards out with what i had planned and what my dream setup would be i trust you guys will put me right, biggest groan at the minute is choosing gpu's but hey will come back to you's in a bit.

Don't be such a muppet Mr T :p stick with that build and work on the overclock and fine tuning - there is NO point going to SB-E after all that money.
wait for Kepler gpu's and spend your money on that instead, far more bang for the buck and you can have the fun of watercooling them..

In the meantime, when I decide to watercool I will drop you a mail for friendly advice..

Well have had a nap and feel a bit "not so frantic" so thats good. Sage advice Mr Edge sah your absolutely right of course, i know were still in the rumour zone with Kepler but when roughly do we expect it to land .... ooo eck and i bet its the bigg expensive jobbies first.

Hmmmmm doo be doo be doo .... Tea Time :)

An absolute disaster Toxic
Im not sure where I went wrong..
My amazon wishlist had EVERY part I needed, so she could pick and choose
I made sure she knew that PC bits were all I wanted
I even suggested the ones she should buy...

What did I get?

A Noctura NH-D14 CPU cooler - Ok good start
Some clothes - fail
An IKEA voucher - I like to think it was a joke as I hate IKEA, but the voucher was too big to be a joke
A book

In fairness, I think she feels a bit guilty, as she has promised to make it upto me for my birthday in feb, but that is a big hole in my plans..

But I did cheers myself up on boxing day by buying

Asus sabertooth x79 mobo
G.skill 16Gb RAM 2133Mhz - I know there isn't much perfomance gain over 1600Mhz, but with the 5% discount and the special offer it was silly not to..
Coolermaster 1000W PSU
128Gb Crucial M4 SSD

So that is a few bits towards the build now..
There is a new CPU stepping out on Jan 20th, so I will wait until then for the CPU

The case is the one thing that is causing me the most problems
I like the Antec P280 but no side window
The TJ07 is gorgeous, but old tech, no USB3, and cable routing isn't the best
the 600t has potential as does the nzxt tempest
The plan was to let the missus decide which case she liked best and buy it
Nothing really grabbing my attention right now, Im considering buying a £30 case and saving for the TJ11 - maybe..
So a good xmas, but an epic fail from the missus on the IT side

Gives me time to read up on cases and make a choice as Im really stumped at the moment as I hate the looks of so many cases out there at the moment..

Woman for you :D

Good to see you took charge and rectified some of the missfortune "if you want a good job doing do it yourself" bravo. I would give it a few days lull her into a false sense of security then lay on the guilt trip for all its worth.

Whats this new cpu stepping whatsitthingummybobs of which you speak? If that means there will be something less than £500 to choose from i might take the plunge earlier than planned.

Nice cases your thinking off sah, i am guilty of the "another 800d build" syndrome but in all honesty its a cracking case and could save yourself a decent amount of cash, enough to deck the 800d out "good n proper like".

Yeah, I dont want to be yet another TJ07 build either, but it might be unavoidable...

The new stepping is to fix a virtualisation bug that they couldn't fix in time for the initial release, I don't need it, but it makes sense to wait as it is so close..

No need for the guilt trip, she knows, and I will milk it for my birthday...

Yay :p
C2 stepping has arrived, it is only OEM, but I cant wait any longer, so ordered it today.
Also picked up a 2nd 128Gb M4 for raid 0
Slight change of plan, my uncle has offered me a Rampage IV Extreme at a silly price, so im selling the sabertooth x79 and going for R4E, which means that I now need to re-think the case I get
