The AMD Radeon R9 285 Thread

personaly i was hoping for new tech with the 285, like stacked memory, but now i dont expect any card worth it using 28nm, amd and nvidia seem to be saving new techs for 20nm to give it more impact, i believe they both chosed not to push for 4k with this maxwell or tonga, disapointed because we are gonna get boring cards this year, but exciting for next year, the perf jump would be worth it.

Purple headed warrior edition.

Sounds like most AMD cards to me ;)

Seriously though, what's the point in this card? With the 290 being a fantastic card where price/performance ratio is concerned and the 280X being cheap. I don't see the point in this.

EDIT: Just seen the compact one, that could be handy. Looks to be a good card for a Steam Machine.

Seems a reasonable replacement to me. Its not meant to improve upon the 280/x, the 290/x did that, just replace the product at that performance level. Similar to the 5870>6870. 6870 was slower by ~10% (I'm not suggesting that the 285 is slower mind, will have to wait and see). Price might be up but it will drop and have more room to drop than Tahiti while being profitable for AMD (smaller die, simpler pcb).

I was hoping they would add TrueAudio. The omission of TrueAudio shows it's probably going nowhere technology as pointless supporting it when on so few models across the range.

Edit: Sapphire ITX compact edition lists it on overview page, but not seen it mentioned on other brands I've checked.

That purple thing sure looks purty hur hur

Is TrueAudio something that is easily added to cards? If so, why is it omitted from so much of AMD's range? I'd like to see it widely adopted but doesn't seem likely at this rate... :(

I think this would have made more sense if they could have released this card into the initial Rx series line up. Instead they just did the high end 290(X) and low end 260(X) with the new features and filled the rest of the line up re-badged last gen.

They created their own problem by having the 280(X) in the line up that is now in the way of the proper second rung R9 card.

Unless these o/c well i cant see them replacing the 280x's should have been a 275 name or something for these to avoid confusion, Yes i realise 280's will be Eol but its still in the current naming system, Or AMD should have left them called 7970's

Sapphire Officially Launches its Radeon R9 285 Lineup

SAPPHIRE Technology has just announced three new models in its successful R9 series of graphics cards based on the latest GCN (Graphics Core Next) architecture from AMD. The SAPPHIRE R9 285 Dual-X is a new model from SAPPHIRE that features a new GCN core and the company's Dual-X cooler. Dual-X, with its two aerofoil fans, and set of graduated sizes of heatpipes, is an efficient and quiet cooler design which received industry acclaim in previous generations of products. The standard R9 285 model has 2GB of the latest GDDR5 memory clocked at 1375MHz (5.5GB/s effective) and a GCN core with 1792 stream processors clocked at 918MHz. The R9 285 OC model features the enhanced clock speeds of 965MHz for the core and 1400MHz for the memory (5.6GB/s effective).

At the same time SAPPHIRE introduces the R9 285 ITX Compact OC edition. Developed specially for small form factor PC systems, this model features a shorter PCB, measuring only 171mm long, and an efficient heatpipe cooler with a single fan. Sharing the same GCN core as the Dual-X models, the ITX Compact is no slouch with core clocks of 928MHz and memory clocks of 1375MHz (5.5GB/s effective).

All three models share the latest features of AMD GCN, including AMD Trueaudio technology for the most realistic sound reproduction in games, as well as AMD Image quality enhancement, AMD HD Media accelerator and AMD PowerTune for optimum performance. They offer support for the very latest games and applications with DirectX 12 and OpenGL 4.4 and the on-board Dual BIOS supports both UEFI and legacy systems.

All three models also support AMD Eyefinity, for multi-screen operation. They are CrossFire ready for accelerated performance using multiple cards in a CrossFire enabled mainboard. No interconnect cables are required as CrossFire is now enabled over the PCI-Express bus.

APP acceleration is also supported for enhanced performance in a wide range of applications using the stream processing capabilities and specific hardware features of the GCN graphics architecture. Typical applications include Video encoding and decoding, compression and multiplexing for media distribution, gaming and video conferencing. APP acceleration can also enhance everyday tasks such as Internet browsing, Office applications and file compression with supported software suites.

The SAPPHIRE R9 285 series of graphics cards will be available from September 2nd from etailers and retailers worldwide.

Powercolor are trying to shake off their "Cheap'n chearful budget brand" image and doing a pretty good job of it, they have been very well made, effective, dependable GPU's as far as my experience of them goes.

Personally i would already rate the PCS+ 290 higher than most, beaten only by the Lighting and Vapour-X.

Its good to see them still pushing further with swanky new Fan and Power Phase designs.

Go Powercolor.. :)
