Rumor: VEGA has been delayed, but not because of yield issues but because of performance issues

Although no one will officially confirm this, AMD Vega was postponed few times (according to AIBs). The reason for the delay is not related to any yield issues, but performance. AMD is clearly trying to boost it by optimizing software to the very last moment. This might also explain missing reviews of Frontier (even from the most trusted tech sites). The reality is that the very first person to provide gaming benchmarks of Vega Frontier is probably going to have the most popular content in months.

Seems like AMD's driver team hasn't been getting any sleep for the last 6 months. Which matches up to the problem mentioned by Raja during the AMA. Will be interesting to see what they can accomplish.

Well for one its a new chip which always need time to use its full potential (just look at the Rottr Ryzen patch...28% plus FPS).
Also when the usual day one game drivers could yield an average 10-15% for the cards, it wouldn't make sense...let's say it would be disastrous to test Vega with the professional driver which hasn't got any game profiles.

It's not surprising that a brand new architecture needs brand new drivers and optimisations. What is surprising is that they haven't sorted it yet!

Pretty much the only sensible thing to assume at this point:

So, my take on this is:
  • ...
  • It seems to me (just guessing) that even though 'the compute performance is there', the flip-side is that 'the gaming performance is not quite there'.
  • As a result, they're showing the card doing CAD work, but asking sites not to bench it for games.
My suspicion is that Vega with all its changes (NCU, HBCC, new geometry processors, etc) has resulted in extensive changes being needed on the software front. The gaming drivers are likely 'just not ready' and AMD still hopes it will be able to unlock considerably more performance.

They just don't want to put themselves into the same situation the RX480 was where launch-day drivers did a lot of injustice to the card's true potential.
...

AMD should really let the driver team do its work and learn lessons from this because Navi is going to be the same.

Remember it is a rumour, and being that for well over a year we have been pretty sure it would be 2nd quarter this year it doesn't seem too delayed. We will just need to wait and see.

Q2 only has 3 days left. Vega gaming will be disappointingly late.

I think Vega FE technically keeps their promise true for a Q2 launch, with the RX coming out a month later.

Why are there no reviews? Did reviewers not have these days before?

Yes technically, but I think most people were under the impression that Vega Gaming was going to be released in Q2 as AMD didn't say otherwise until they announced the FE launch date.

It appears no FE cards have been sent out for review. Review sites are buying their own if they want to review them.

You can't say they didn't deliver though being that people are buying them and getting them. AMD never said they would have the gaming editions of Vega available in Q2 either.

Well it explains the delay, the lack of gaming benchmarks and why AMD have been so guarded regarding gaming performance.

Looks like EVGA did me a favor the other day then, they sent me a brand new 850W supernova plat. 2 for a RMA of a 4 year old 750W supernova gold G2 :D

If a rumour page is able to "explain" circumstance then I guess we may as well believe all rumours.....or not.

Think I'll wait for actual news from AMD before believing articles requiring buckets of salt.
