The Ampere RTX 3090 Owners Thread

Except they’ve screwed us this time by using ECC VRAM, so my understanding is that you don’t experience artifacts with this gen, just lower performance if you push the VRAM too hard.

Can’t say that I’ve tried so aggressively with the 3090 though.

Could certainly do it with the 2080Ti, which used non-ECC VRAM.

Hmmmm, now you mention it... Let me run furmark super quick.

Huh, quick hard OC on mem and yea, just got usual crash, no artifacts.

Thought as much. Don’t know if ECC is a GDDR6X thing or not, but I always thought it was limited to server RAM, rather then VRAM.

I’m sure there’s probably a reason why but I’ve no idea.

Also realised its ECC, not EEC. :p

Thinking about it, it may be because the card isn’t primarily for gaming, although that’s all mine will ever be used for. Guess error-correction has lots of uses when used more creatively.

GDDR6 doesnt have ECC, GDDR6x does have ECC. ECC was added to G6x because of the high clockspeeds they run at, they found that bitflips were possible were causes crashes so ECC was added for stability while maitaining high clocks

But ECC prevents bitflips causing crashes by lowering your performance (error correction costs frametime) and so as I've mentioned before it makes it harder to diagnose faulty memory on Nvidia's new cards - instead of crashes you will get like 20 or 30% lower performance and unless you're in the habit of tracking your performance you may never realise. Good for Nvidia and AIB since they will now have fewer RMA if customers never realise their card is broken

Hey Jay.

Apologies, I can't seem to find the pictures of the build you did with the external rad. I am probably being a dumbass!

Edit: I found it! Amazing mate!

I've been looking at the Watercool MO-RA3 360 Core. The one with the 120mm fans.

I've been measuring my case and looking at brackets etc and it seems entirely doable to fit it to the case (NZXT H700 original)

Might involve a bit of trickery but nothing more difficult than I have already done!

Only issue I guess is routing all the tubes (removing PCIE brackets, possible drill a little bit.)

I think I'd probably hook up a fan hub as well, as I am currently going off the motherboard for everything.

Anyway, you are a very bad influence because I now have that in my shopping basket and my finger is hovering over the buy button!

What do you reckon? I know the build currently works. That's half the battle!

Just wondering about whether that product will be an issue.

Trying to see what metals it uses, so there is no corrosion. If I do it, will be using with ek-coolstream-pe-360-triple's in the loop.

Did you buy a quick disconnect kit? looks so much easier for maintenance! I have looked at the EK one, but I think you are just paying over the odds for stuff you don't need.

Time to take it to the next level?

Interesting! So you're gonna mount the rad directly to the side of the case im guessing? Gonna be a weighty case with all that water + Rad, as the rad weights nearly 8kg on its own empty. For my external setup i ended up hooking up the fans to a fan hub controller which is sata powered. Plus im using Arctic P12 fans so theres only 1 connector to the controller once they're all hooked up together. Saves a ton of cables!

From research i've been doing, the Mo-RA3's are fairly restrictive so you might wanna consider a second pump in series to keep the flow rate up IF it drops below 1lpm. The Mo-Ra3 uses copper internals with aluminum fins but theres no contact with the aluminum so you'll be fine with that.

Yes i did, i went with the Alphacool ones, maintenance is easy now. Easy to upgrade as well if i ever needed to or just throwing in another 360 rad for shiz and giggles lol.

That's helpful, thanks for that.

I am guessing a primary reason for doing this in the first place, is to have the radiator outside the case getting unrestricted access to fresh air.

Wondering if perhaps toning it down a level and perhaps adding just another EK (Perhaps thicker) 360mm rad (or perhaps slightly bigger) on the outside might do the job.

I think I heavily overestimated the weight and size of the Mora 3 hahah! :p

Be cool to just try and attach it to the case somehow though. Failing that it would be good to just attach it to the wall or some feet or some kind of bracket.

Needs some investigation. I saw the benefits you got from the additional rad. I know you are running two loops.

I wonder if a single EK D5 can deal with x3 360mm radiators. Only using 1 GPU and CPU and PCH chipset with it?

Hey again Jay.

I just got all my watercooling gear. Just waiting on a flow meter and fan grill.

Just looking at the quick disconnects.

Are yours a little angled on one side on the female connector? I have two sets and both look the same so may just be normal.

Just looks a little strange. When I snap them together you have to make sure it goes all the way and you can hear the air coming out when taken apart sometimes which i suppose is a good sign!

Edit: I've just had another look and it seems you have to line up the female connector before inserting on one side. If you don't, one part can be a bit off centre. Not sure if you noticed this.

I think it's air (water) tight blowing through it and closing one end. Don't hear any air escaping then through the QD's.

You got a picture of it? I dont see it with mine, its a circle theres no offset or any angle on the end of it.

As you are closing or opening the connection between male and female the circle can become offset at one end.

You just ensure it goes on completely straight and then seems to look fine.

I was able to close the connectors at a slight angle, which may not work well!

You wouldn't notice it at first. I just like to check these things! Mine looks just like yours in the picture now.

I googled and others have noticed this too.

I was going to say, ive had no issues connecting or disconnecting them. The operation works smoothly and its a very satisfying lock when it connects.

The way i do it is, pull back the ring and push the male connector in and release the lock.

Was lucky to get myself a 3090 Suprim X (non-scalped) back in late January, was about £1700 at the time  (Had a Gigabyte OC 3090 but died within 45 days :(, still waiting on RMA progress to complete)
