Post workout shakes - required or a load of hokum?

Common sense tells me that providing I hit my protein totals per day then it really shouldn't matter?

I've just read an article that suggests you don't really need a post workout shake.

So - what's the general consensus?

If anyone has any links to studies done on this subject I'd be grateful.
