The answer to Xbox 360 storage needs?

ive been looking around the net, as i want to buy a 500gb 2.5 SATA drive for my xbox 360

but i cant seem to find anyone doing a tutorial for a hdd DIY upgrade for a drive larger than a 120GB

no one got a 320gb or 500gb drive installed? or am i right in guessing its not possible due to some hddss.bin file or something??

This is correct, although I believe it's possible to use 250gb now but I don't think we can talk about how here.

Sounds good to me. I just picked up another 16gb memory stick for £17 so 2 of those and the standard 20gb would be awesome

The thing is, you can pick up 60GB drives for not that much more. Hell, I sold a spare 120GB 360 drive to a mate for £40 a while ago. Seems to me that if you're willing to shell out £34 on a couple of USB sticks and dedicate them to 360 use you might as well just save a few quid extra and get a hard drive.

This is still a good move though and it'll make transferring savegames between hard drives that little bit easier (albeit still time consuming as they need to be copied individually).

It'll still be hard for people with 20Gb HDD. You can only install 2 games on a 20Gb drive since the usable space is only 14Gb or so. A game at 6GB each and its full already. The USB sticks would help, but even at 16Gb each its still just 2 games on each 16Gb stick. And with DLC, videos and saves, the space is even less.

Of course you can delete and re-install games when you aren't playing them, but still.

I think just having the ability to install 2-4 games plus DLC will be enough for us current 20gbers.
We aren't asking for much, just more than one game on the HD :(

Indeed, especially as most of the 20gb consoles are from the jet engine generation.

It's coming... 6th April...

http://majornelson.com/archive/2010/03/26/USB-Memory-Support-for-the-Xbox-360-coming-April-6th.aspx

On April 6th, we will be releasing a system update over Xbox LIVE for your Xbox 360 that will allow USB flash drives to be used for storing profiles, game saves, demos and more. I’ve been testing this feature out for a few weeks, and I have to say it’s really great. Once you take the system update on April 6th, you’ll be able to connect your USB flash drives to your console and head over to the memory section to configure your new storage device. Once you do that, the system will conduct a one time performance and integrity check to confirm the drive is working properly. You will then be able to configure how much storage to use on the device, up to 16 GB. The remaining space on the flash drive will be accessible by your PC or Mac. USB Hard drives may work, but like flash memory, you’ll only be able to use up to 16GB of space. Since performance on flash based USB storage is usually better, I highly recommend using flash based instead of spinning media like a hard drive…it’s just going to give you a MUCH better experience.

Also what would be wrong with Hot swapping pen drives as and when needed, for example forza3 alone takes up like 12ish gb now all that one pen drive and pout that in whenever you're playing that, and a another drive for other installed games and saves on hard drive or something.

Edit: Apart from price of extra pen drives of course.

just had a quick look and 16GB flash drives are about £25.

250gb HDD for the 360 is about £60 - £70 ?

Unless you have spare usb pens handy might not work out any cheaper ?

It's all relative to the individual person really, and does go a long way to explaining why Microsoft have nose-dived the hard drive pricing.

Some, as clear from here, are going to be perfectly happy with 16GB or 32GB of storage. Equally, they will be happy hotswapping between, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB drives depending on what they have lying around.

Fortunately for those of us who are storage junkies, it then helps bring the prices down for the larger hard drives :D.

So Microsoft Xbox 360 branded flash drives are up on GameStop, $70 for a 16Gb

Lucky you can use third party ones lol, what a ridiculous price to ask.

In the UK they must be expecting £30-40 odd for a 16Gb? You can get them for £15 but of course they don't have the 360 branding.

Edit: Wouldn't surprise me if it turns out third party support is gonna get dropped forcing the use of Microsoft branded drives! Not really an issue either way though as I have a 120Gb HDD and don't really ever have to take saved games/my profile anywhere.
