Join the TA for a bit first, get a little taster of army life and make some mates that have been doing it for longer.

I suggest you take a look at the other forces aswell, including the police.

THink carefully before even joining the TA or the RAF/Navy equivalent, as if you choose to change from the TA to full time Navy they may have issues and ask you why you didn't join the Navy first.
