The Banter Thread

Nothing the FA does surprises me anymore. I think it's ridiculous though.

Let's put it this way, if I had a Twitter account which was clearly tied to my employer then I'd think twice about filling it with "banter" (I use that term loosely) with my colleagues. Particularly when that banter contains terms that could be construed as homophobic.

He deserves the fine for being an idiot, nothing more.

How is his twitter account tied to his employer (anymore than anybody on twitter)? He's a kid that's harmlessly messing around with a friend. I'm sure nearly everybody on these forums has once or twice said something similar. It's clear that there was no homophobic intent so I'm not sure why the FA couldn't simply explain their concerns and ask him to be careful in future. Had he used the term maliciously then fair enough - he didn't though.

Does your Twitter or Facebook profile picture feature you in a shirt with your company logo on? Maybe it does and you love your job more than I do. :p

Harmlessly messing around but a) it's crap "banter" and b) the FA rules clearly state that reference shouldn't be made to someone's sexuality or ethnicity. You should get a 10k fine automatically anyway for unironically calling someone gay unless you're under the age of 12.

Good lord I don't know what's more shocking, that he got fined or that Solo thinks that ok

Another step down the road of plastic footballers not wanting to say anything. He was winding a mate up how can you get fined for that?

I look forward to the day all players blanket refuse to speak to any media outlets and fans/FA Et al all sit scratching their heads and wondering why. It's already bad enough with the pre prepared bill they trot out every game.

So if he had a different profile picture it would be ok?

Whether it's crap banter or not (and he's not speaking in his native language so he can be forgiven), I don't see what fining him for a harmless joke achieves over having a word with him about it. A £10k fine for a harmless joke is even harder to swallow when the FA have previously fined players less for comments relating to sexual orientation that were clearly meant with malicious intent.

Calling someone gay these days is just above poo poo head and on the list of insults. Then again the FA would probably twist that into a racist slur to secure another 10k.

Particularly in the light of idiotic comments by Zenit St Petersburg fans today it's obvious that football needs to separate itself from all kinds of discrimination. A blanket ban is the way to go since footballers can't be trusted to dress themselves never mind engage common sense before posting their thoughts to the world.

Players have been issued with guidelines on social media (http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/...e-issues-club-guidelines-on-social-media.html) and Suso clearly uses "gay" in a negative sense so I don't see what the issue is here?

And before anyone goes down that route, I couldn't care less what club this involves.
