Well, if Benitez can get some good results together (which he does appear to be doing), then the fans will definitely be won over. Just give it time, I'd say.

Except what Rafa did went largely unnoticed like all those other good deeds everyday, much like when he left the club. Then again not surprised by your comments

Just watching the MNF special from New Year's Eve. Neville on Fergie's comments and the diving/cheating debate were brilliant. You might not agree with him but the edge and total desire to win that he has is what separates elite sportspeople from the rest of us.

Also, I know it's a bit contrary to our counter attacking traditions, but I wish that we could develop a pressing game like Stoke. Would really give us an extra edge.

Incidents like the Gilchrist one are very rare even in cricket which has a very strongly embedded moral code, and there have been similar incidents in football (Di Canio stopping play for the injured keeper, Robbie Fowler and the non-penalty, Leicester v Forest from a few years ago to name a few).

Anyway, Neville's point wasn't so much that cheating is right, more that it is inevitable when you have 22 people on a pitch desperate to win a game.

I wouldn't say the honourable side of cricket's rare, especially compared to any kind of genuine fair play in football! It's often the case people will walk, or there will be a fielder who'll admit they're not sure if the ball hit the ground first (so they go to video) etc... and most definitely often compared to the number of times anything similar happens in football, which is frankly scummy in comparison!

Nah, he basically said it's fine for people to cheat, because the refs/umpires/authorities are there to stop them. I just disagree with that notion, and your comment about a total desire to win, including cheating, being what differentiates elite athletes from normal people - instead I'd say all athletes have an unbelievable desire to win, and, lamentably, some use that as an excuse to cheat.

You are comparing apples and oranges.

How many incidents are there in a football match where an incorrect decision has been made. When you get fouled and get nothing you are hardly going to be putting your hands up and admit that you were not fouled the next time.

I'll be that you will get fewer incorrect decisions in a cricket season than in a single football match. The decisions are much easier and clear cut in cricket. Did it hit the bat or not; did it touch the ground or not; was his foot over the line when he bowled. With football you are deciding if the contact was enough to go down, did he dive, was there actually any contact.

Add in the problem of a contact sport played with 22 players at speed vs a very small number of active players in cricket and the static nature of the umpires. I have no idea why everyone thinks that football should be compared to other sports when there is no other sport like it. Maybe in 10 years when everything is done with technology and we are 99% sure that a correct decision is always made then I will accept that we cam compare it to most other sports.
