From the creators of Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera comes The Bard’s Tale IV. Thirty years ago, The Bard’s Tale put Brian Fargo and Interplay on the map and launched a storied career crafting some of the most beloved cRPGs in gaming history.

In-engine video!

We finally put the finishing touches on the video for The Bard’s Tale IV In-Engine Video. The biggest question we get is how we plan to bring the genre forward, and this video should answer the question. Exploring in the world is a major part of the experience and we wanted to make use of the full screen and all that Unreal has to offer to make it as compelling as possible. Once combat starts, the combat shifts out of the first person mode. We are still debating the best ways to present combat as that is ultimately dictated by the final budget, but rest assured it will be party and turn/phase based.

The song you’re hearing was written and performed by multi-award winning Gaelic singer and multi-instrumentalist Julie Fowlis, who you may know from the two songs she contributed to Disney Pixar’s major motion picture, Brave. You may also know her from her own albums, too. Julie Fowlis grew up in a Gaelic-speaking community immersed in Scottish culture, and the songs she will contribute to The Bard’s Tale IV’s soundtrack will make the setting that much richer.

From Julie herself: "Éamon and I are delighted to have contributed music for the iconic game The Bard's Tale. For us, it has been a fascinating journey exploring and creating music, drawing from the depths of our ancient Scottish Gaelic tradition, and marrying it with the fantasy world of a renowned computer game, now 30 years old." We hope you enjoyed this first look at The Bard’s Tale IV!

Thank you for your continued support,
Brian Fargo,
Your leader in Exile

Was going to say, they just extended the 'free game' period to 48 hours from the initial 24. I've backed it, think I'll be getting Wasteland 2.

Have also been waiting (what seems like an age!!) for Tides of Numenera after backing that, too. Really like what inExile are doing and the way they go about it.

I'm also yet to grab a copy of Pillars of Eternity (speaking of Kickstarter), but hearing some people bemoan the difficulty levels.

Anyway, excited for the Bard 4. Should be a good mix of tongue in cheek revelry!

They're also sinking 1.25m of their own cash in, once it (hopefully) hits target and is funded. So, you're looking at at least 2.5m of spend, plus whatever else comes in over and above the funding target and with a now pretty established group producing it.

Interested to see what the stretch goals will be and there is promise of a 3 minute gameplay video in the next few weeks.

T:TON (I think) pushed up to around 4.8m so far with cash received after the Kickstarter ended. From memory, we've only had one teaser video back in September for that one, high time there was another one!

This was a no brainer for me. I chucked 100s of hours into the original trilogy about 20 years ago. I am a sucker for dungeon crawlers (EOB, DM , LOG etc), so automatically backed it.

Also as joeyjojo said, get it before the end of the 4th (I think) and you get a copy of WL2 or Witcher 1 or Witcher 2. All GOG editions I believe.

Yep, also makes $20 now = $40 of game investment + free Wasteland 2. Win win.

Agree,

Don't see how this can go too far wrong really, they've already demonstrated how good the writing can be with W2 and all the signs point to the depth and storytelling of T:TON being phenomenal. Throw humour into it with the Bard 4 and I'm really excited!

Plus, initial screenshots imply it's going to look pretty polished. Interested to see this gameplay video coming out soon.

Cheers, was just about to add it to the OP!

I found myself reminiscing about my old Amstrad CPC days this morning while trawling through ebay... Then I stumble on this kickstarter while reading RPS!

I only ever got to play the first one, as they never converted the rest of the series to the CPC, which sucked. 25+ years of bitterness aside, I still have fond memories of 99 Beserkers (x4), fire horns and spending 10 minutes multi loading dungeon levels from cassette. :D

They got $25 out of me.

From memory it went Fire Horn > Frost Horn > Flame Horn :D (although nothing more annoying than charging into a battle only to realise that your horn had run out during the last battle and disappeared leaving your Bard pretty much useless!)

I spent countless hours on the first one - logging all the counter numbers on my cassette deck for loading various dungeons! :D

I can still get from the Guild to Harkyns Castle (to battle the berserkers) via the review board and Roscoe's energy emporium without a map!

The only thing that concerns me is the mention of "phase-based" combat - I know the original text-based description was essentially done in "phases" but I wasn't too keen on a recent turn-based game I tried! (can't remember the name tho!)
