*** The BBC F1 2012 Coverage Thread ***

Hmm, I don't like the idea of them doing current drivers*. If you include Hamilton, then surely Alonso and Vettel must also be there? In which case, what about Button or Raikkonen?

These kind of things are always much better being done in hindsight.

*Schumacher excepted, of course, because he's such a legend already/a pale imitation of what he used to be (ARKNOR BAIT GO).

Hard to decide. I think a number one for each decade or so is a better way of doing it, as things change so quickly.

I always think it's better with those kind of lists just to think of them as lists, and not as rankings. The celebration of their abilities and achievements is more important than some silly squabbling over which one is better, given the myriad of factors that makes it so difficult to compare.

This is how the list is compiled

The list has been compiled by the BBC F1 team. Each member was asked to come up with their own personal list of the 20 greatest drivers since F1 started in 1950. The rankings provided were combined to produce a BBC F1 top 20, which we will count down through the season from 20 to one

The BBC list does not pretend to be a definitive all-time top 20 - all such things are in any case subjective, given the difficulty of comparing drivers from different eras.

With fourteen more to go, it might be not what you expect. ;)
